Kearnan and Fegan
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 12:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for details on Thomas Kearnan and spouse Jane Fegan from Meath, Ireland. Their daughter Mary Jane Kearnan (1846-1926) married John Harriott (1846-1911) and both moved to Brunswick, Victoria, Australia in 1880 aboard the vessel Camperdown.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Mary Jane and John were born well before the start of civil birth records in Ireland, so you would have to search for church records of baptism for them. You usually require a fairly detailed location to do this - e.g. the name of the town, townland or parish a particular family lived. You also need to know the denomination.

see : Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

Do you believe Mary Jane and John married in Ireland ?

On Griffith's Valuation (a land Taxation Survey) there's a Patrick Kearnan in the town of Kells that might be related. This entry is dated 1854.

The surname Kearnan could have a number of variations in spelling that might be worth considering including Kearnan or even Kernan, but probably most commonly as Keirnan.

About 16 people in Co. Meath on Griffith's valuation in Co. Meath as Keirnan, but no sign of a Thomas that I see.

Hi,

No, Mary and John must have met up after moving to Australia as they married here. All their children were born in Victoria, Australia. I have tried different variations of the name Kearnan but the trails lead no where. I have found no details on Thomas and Jane to follow them up.

Thanks anyway for your help.

I would start a little more recent and look for Mary Jane first...

Do you know the denomination of your Kearnans ?

Hi,

Yes, I'm pretty sure they were all RC. Mary Jane was born in Meath, Ireland. My sister and my grandmother (and her cousin) all tried to find info with no results (1985). The parish priest at the time had nothing either except details on a daughter Ellen.

I am going to Ireland and Scotland in June/July. Maybe it will be easier then. I will have to try and dig a bit deeper. Thanks for your help.

which parish was this ?

Quite a few RC parishes in Co. Meath. Nearly all the available RC records are in the National Library on Microfilm, but you need to know the parish to do a search.
