Entry points to USA
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 11:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi all. I'm trying to discover where my relatives entered the USA in 1883. They left Co. Down two brothers and a sister  Thomas G. Nelson, Samuel L Nelson and Letitia Nelson. The two brothers settled in Michigan. Letitia Married and went to Deer lodge Montana, I have information on the boys nothing really on Letitia but would really like to find out where they entered the states. I've tried Ellis island but I think their dates were too early. Hoping Belfast beau.

I think this website only covers the New York entry point but is pre Ellis Island ... it is free ...

http://castlegarden.org/

This website appears to also have other entry points but they appear to be pay to view ...

http://www.stevemorse.org/ellis/cg.html

I believe Ancestry also has passenger lists although I don't know the years they cover offhand. If you don't have a sub you might want to check if your local public library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition. This should give you access.

www.ellisisland.org has passenger records 1892 (when Ellis Island opened) to 1924. The Castle Garden site, also free, covers earlier New York arrivals but there will be few details listed (usually just name, age, occupation and country of origin as well as name of vessel and date of arrival).

If the siblings lived in Michigan and Montana you should also consider they might have come to U.S. via Canada.

Hi Polarbear. I've already tried both Ellis Island and castle garden sites without success, probably I'm not entering the right information. I don't know the ships name and only the year 1883, these little gems came as a vague memory from a living cousin in the USA. Thank you for taking the time to respond, I will have to apologise to aghadowey next. Belfast beau.

Hi Aghadowey. Apologies for not refreshing the original post for the Nelsons. I had thought of the Canada crossings I just wasn't sure where to find them. Is there a set pattern for refreshing old posts that I should use? Belfast beau.

As long as a topic isn't locked you can post a new reply- just remember that 'bumping' up your post isn't really allowed.
