Fate of Charles Jenkins born 1864 Llanelly
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 15:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am tying up some loose ends and would be grateful if anyone could help. I am trying to find out the fate of Charles Jenkins born 1864/1865 Llanelly. Parents were John Jenkins and Hannah (nee Stone) and in 1871 Charles, age 6 was living with Hannah and her second husband John Rees in the New Inn, Glyn Hamlet, Llanelly.

I can't find obviously find Charles in the 1881 census or his death between 1871 and 1881. He is definitely not living with Hannah and her second husband John Rees at the New Inn in 1881.

I thought I may have found him in the 1901 and 1911 census in Glamorgan living in Llangyfelach Road, Landore/Brynhyfryd, Swansea, Glamorgan with his wife Jane and children. However, when I try and trace this Charles back further it gets confusing as in 1881 he is living with others Jenkins siblngs, but also Croft/Craft siblings, with the mother listed as Tamar Croft in 1881 and Thamer Craft in 1891. Having a mother with surname Croft/Craft but with Children with surnames Jenkins and Croft/Craft is confusing. The Jenkins children are the older chidren, those with the surname Croft/Craft being born later e.g. 1881

Tamar Croft age 40 born Ponypridd
George Jenkins age 22 born Pontypridd
Charles Jenkins age 18 born Llanelly
Miles Jenkins age 19 born Llanelly
Alfred Jenkins age 16 born Llanelly
Mary Croft age 7 born Swansea
Elvina Croft age 6 born Swansea

What would help is being able to trace the Tamar/Thamar Croft/Craft family in 1871 and earlier. If in 1871 there is still a Charles Jenkins living with her then this would definitely rule this Charles out, as "my" Charles was living with John and Hannah Jenkins in 1871. I believe I did try to search for the Croft/Craft family in 1871 and earlier but without any success. Perhaps someone who is still subscribed to Ancestry or similar will have more success?

I would be grateful for any possible matches/solutions.

This looks to be Charles W Rees (death 1881, Llanelly) on the 1871 -

John Rees   50
Margaret Rees   46
Charles W Rees   8
Daniel W Rees   5
Evan W Rees   2
Mary Ann Richard   17
Isaac Griffith   38

RG10 Piece 5468 Folio 70 Page 3 Llanelly, Carmarthenshire

Therefore I believe that the death found is not the Charles you are looking for.

Thanks for tracing this family back so far, great job! At least it rules out this Charles Jenkins as being from my line.

His whereabouts after 1871 therefore are still a mystery, therefore if anyone has alternative suggestions they would be greatly appreciated i.e. alternative matches in the 1881 census onwards with relatives or as a lodger (he would have been 16 in 1881), or possible death entries. (Just to clarify as well that any possible death entries would be for Charles Jenkins, not Charles Rees as Rees was the surname of Hannah's second husband).

Hi

I have managed to find some more info which may be of help. Although identified in the 1871 census as Charles Jenkins (age 6), his full name is Charles John Jenkins and his date of birth is 28/11/1864, born Glyn Hamlet, Llanelly (the birth was not registered until 09/01/1865 for some reason).

Perhaps this will help the experts out to find him in the 1881 census and beyond. There is no obvious recording of his death on free BMD
