Hi Kooky
Only just read your posting, and wondered how far back you'd managed to get. I've been doing some research into the Vardys of Durham and Northumberland, and can go back a couple of generations from Robert Vardy. He was the son of John and Jane Vardy, nee Robinson; John was the son of William and Ann Vardy, nee Jutson; and William was the son of Ralph and Mary Vardy, nee Myers. Let me know if you're still interested in this line, and I can send you more details.

Thank you for your interest. I was looking at this for a friend. I was going to show him your messsage at the UEA computer group this week, but unfortunately, Rootschat is blocked because it is a chat forum :o  ??? the room we use is in an annexe to a school, where there is a block on all social media and 'chat' sites
I will print off your post and take it with me next week 8)

My friend was very interested in your info! :)
He would be very grateful for any further details, especially place names!
He has very little beyond Robert Vardy. He is his g.g.grandfather.
Thanks in anticipation

Hi

Robert Vardy is my 3rd Great Grandfather, I was having trouble finding out more of his past, but  having seen your previous messages, I have added his parents John and Jane, grandparents William and Ann, great grandparents Ralph and Mary.
My lineage is:
Barbara Bewick 1972-
Brian Bewick m Sylvia Morton
Thomas N Bewick m Isabella Jennings
Robert J Bewick m Bessie Newton
Robert Bewick m Ann Vardy
Robert Vardy m Anne Forster
John Vardy m Jane Robinson
William Vardy m Ann Jutson
Ralph Vardy m Mary Myers

If there is anyone who can help me go further back, that will be fantastic.

Kind Regards
Barbz

Hi Barbz - Robert Vardy is my 3rd Gt Grandfather too. Through his and Anne's daughter Margaret (b. 1832 Whalton) - married to William Laing. I can't take the Vardy line any further back but I do have Anne's parents down as Joseph Forster (1758-1829) and Ann Davison (1760-1818).

Here's what I have re William Laing and Margaret Vardy

1. Laing, William (b. 1838 - Scotswood, Northumberland, England, d.
  26-Nov-1874 - Sunderland, Durham, England)

sp. Vardy, Margaret (b. 1832 - Whalton, Northumberland, England, d.
  1924 - Sunderland, Durham, England), m. 1858-08-16 - Whalton,
  Northumberland, England

    2. Laing, Charles William (b. 1859 - Bishopwearmouth, Durham,
      England, d. 1936)

sp. Waddell, Isabella (b. 1857 - Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland, d.
22-Feb-1941 - Hardwick Castle Eden, Durham)

    2. Laing, Alfred (b. 1861 - Sunderland, Durham, England, d.
      12-Dec-1896 - Sunderland, Durham, England)

sp. Gibson, Frances Agnes (b. 1865-07-18 - Markinch, Fife,
      Scotland, d. 1957-01-20 - Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland), m.
      1888 - Markinch, Fife, Scotland

    2. Laing, Robert Vardy (b. 1863 - Sunderland, Durham, England, d.
      Sep-1908 - Sunderland, Durham, England)

      sp. Lambert, Minnie Osborne (b. 1869), m. 1887 - Sunderland,
      Durham, England

    2. Laing, Samuel Buck (b. 1864 - Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England, d.
      1864 - Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England)

    2. Laing, Ann Buck (b. 1866 - Sunderland, Durham, England, d. 1929 -
      Sunderland, Durham, England)

sp. Plank, George Delmar (b. 1847 - Sunderland, Durham, England,
      d. 1926 - Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England), m. 1894-06-06 -
      Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England

    2. Laing, Margaret Vardy (b. 1867 - Sunderland, Durham, England, d.
      1954 - Sunderland, Durham, England)

    2. Laing, Caroline (b. 1870 - Sunderland, Durham, England, d. 1891 -
      Sunderland, Durham, England)

William Laing was a Wine & Spirit Merchant in Sunderland. His sons were also in this business (Laing & Co and Laing Bros.). His parents were both from Scotland.

It also looks like one of Margaret's brothers (John Edward Vardy b. 1830) married one of William's sisters (Margaret Thomson Laing b. 1835) at about the same time. The marriage took place Houghton-le-Spring, Durham.

Hope this helps. I have further info on later generations. Please let me know if you need anything else.  :)
