finding my Grandfather
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 19:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to trace my Great Grandfather without much success
he was a Dempsey and from Northern Island
he arrived from what we can work out in South Africa late 1800,s to early 1900,s
He ran a post-cart between Durban and Pietermaritburg and then started a boxing gym
any help would be appreciated
Thxs
Brian Dempsey

I am afraid I have no History as in those days coming to South Africa did not require SA registration

Do you at least know his name and approx. year of birth?

The South African NAAIRS website might have him in their online databases.   Unfortunately it's not working for me tonight so I can't give you any indication of what "Dempsey" records there are.

The Death notice usually gives "Birthplace of Deceased" and "Parents of Deceased".

Good luck.

Perhaps you could start with your grandfather then?    If you had his marriage certificate it would give his father's name and occupation.
What is your grandfather's name etc?

Once you get a few more details (a name would be a good start) do let us know. I 'collect' Dempseys from Ulster and might even have misplaced your ancestor in my files  :)
