I will post on both boards so the Irish specialists can do their bit....
James Dominic buried 5 Dec 1942 aged 59 years, Stellawood
Brian John Dempsey was buried in the 3 Feb 1933 aged 14 and a half years old... Stellawood Cemetery, Durbs
Dennis Lawrence buried 19 Apr 1983 aged 68, Stellawood
Lilian Swann was the his wife, married in 1913.
Hope this helps you ti find the births.

NAAIRS search seems to be working now. If you search Durban Archives Repository with only the word 'Dempsey' there are 14 results but all 1960 or later- some of these may jog your memory.

If you are needing to search the archives for deaths etc in Natal, use the NAB option as the main archives are in Pietermaritzburg and that is where all the files are held.
You can find JD deaths here in 1942, the estate being finalised in 1943. See the RSA board for details on ordering a death notice-very beneficial.

Thanks for posting the detail on both threads, Ruth.

Had a quick look in 1901 Irish census but no James Dominic Dempsey listed, quite a few James Dempseys age 18 +/- 5 yrs (most not in present day Northern Ireland) so can't really see an obvious match yet.

Will move this topic from Beginners to Ireland- General.

I saw a passenger listing for a James Dempsey sailing to Cape Town b app 1871 and possibly the same chap on board ship, b Wicklow Ireland in the 1891 census. But if he was a seaman he may not be on the passenger lists. I am trying to find the marriage record at present to see if that offers any help.

1871 seems a bit early but worth keeping in mind.

1891 census in England? or is there one in South Africa for that date?

If James Dempsey went to South Africa via Europe or another country he may not be included in online lists for passengers leaving the U.K.

The marriage certificate is certainly needed to get more details- will father/mother or both be listed on a S.A. certificate?

1891 UK census but the age does seem to be a bit out. ( We dont have the luxury of census info here!)The marriage data I have is that he married in Durban 22 Jan 1913 aged 28- this would put birth app 1884/5 but the burial puts age at 59 in 1942 which puts birth in the 1882/1883 range. The marriage is just an extract from the parish records so it is unlikely to give parents names. I have given him instructions about applying for the death notice - this should have his birth and parents details if it is filled in correctly.
