There aren't many records for that period.  As a first step, you need to look for him at Castle Garden.  It includes only records for immigrants arriving at New York and is not by any means complete:

http://www.castlegarden.org/
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Thanks for that Erato,
I will take a look.
On Ancestry he comes up, but I don't have a USA subscription.
If someone does could they just put in to a general search, his name.
and then you will see there is an entry for a Frederick Godwin Simpson shipping.
