Hi
In the last few weeks the 1861 census has been published and I have your family (all born Bollington) just prior to James marriage.

1861 RG9-2982-F12 Botany ? Ashton U Lynne

Thomas Dean head 57 labourer born Bollington
Mary               wife 55 housekeeper
James             son 22 cotton weaver
Elizabeth        daug 17 ~
William            son 20 cotton carder
Mary               daug 13 card room hand

I will go back and search the 1841 again

Hi
The 1841 census for Bollington shows the family all born in county

HO107-104-08-Page 6  Water Street Bollington Macclesfield Cheshire

Thomas Deane 30 ag/lab
Mary                 30
Sarah               13 cotton weaver
Eliza                 11 cotton worker
James                3
William               6 months

I have also found a marriage indexed date 30/march/1828 Thomas Dean and Mary Boothby at St Peters church Prestbury (which would be correct for Bollington)

I have not found the family in Bollington in 1851 they may have moved to Lancashire by then.

At least you know that Thomas did exist

Peter

Thank you very much for the information above.  That gives us some more scope for family names.  It is the most exciting news we've had for some time.

Peter

Thanks to your information re James Dean on the 1841 and 1861 Census, I was able to find his brother, William, on the 1881 Census at 38 Church Street, Botany, Ashton U Lyne, Lancashire.  I am perplexed necause William's marriage and children's borths appear to be on the Cheshire BDM site.  Has the border between counties been somewhat fluid?

Another query, if you are able to help, please.  James' wife, Rachel Valentine, had family living in the area of Dukinfield, I think.  James (born ca.1849), Robert (ca.1853) and Thomas (ca. 1855) - all born in Cheshire - emigrated to Queensland, Australia, to join the Deans (James and Rachel) in 1874.  The Valentine parents were Thomas and Margaret (nee Jackson).  Have been watching the Cheshire deaths hoping to locate Thomas and Mary Dean but no success so far.  Would appreciate any help!

Hi
In a nutshell the various boundary chances over the last two hundred years have caused chaos with the unfortunate searcher that as family in the area, this link will give you some info re Ashton u L records.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Ashton-under-Lyne/

Basically Ashton u Lyne is a registration district that was regarded as being in Cheshire for BMD after Cival registration was introduced in 1837. The Cheshire BMD is not a complete index, there are no deaths indexed.

If you look on the "coverage" links in the Cheshire BMD this explains which churches and areas are covered by Cheshire http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

The boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire ran through the middle of the A u L district so for census purposes only a small section appears under Cheshire.

I have found the Dean's in the 1871 census as below sharing a house, Mary being shown as a widow. I have found a possible death for Thomas indexed in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Dec 1863 vol 8d page 803 Ashton the name spelt Dean

1871 RG10-4087-F86  3 Curzon Road Ashton u Lyne

Elizabeth Hardy head widow 39 cotton weaver Bollington
Mary Ann           daug            14  ~          ~    Deaf Ardwick Lancashire
Henry                son              12 scholar          A u L
Mary Deane     head widow 67                       Bollington
William              son             30 coal miner         ~
Elizabeth         daug            27 cotton weaver
Mary                  ~                21 cotton weaver

I could not find Mary senior in the 1881 census so looked for a marriage or death record and found a possible death

Dec 1871 vol 8d page 354 Ashton name spelt Dean

Hope this clears thing up a little, will post again with any thing I can find on the Valentines.

Hi, Peter

Words cannot express my appreciation of all your effort in finding my Deane/Dean and Valentine family.  Thank you for the links you provided.  I was surprised to find the Valentines moved from AUL in 1861 before the wedding of James Dean and Rachel.

Rachel is the only who is missing from the 1861 Census.  Her marraige certificate says she was a frame tenter, place of residence Stayley.  If you can locate her, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Peter,

Thanks for all the looking up you have already done but could we prevail upon you to look at the 1841 and 1851 censuses to see whether the Valentines were in Dukinfield area. I see that Rachel listed herself as born in Dukinfield but in fact was born in Lancashire at Halshaw Moor in the Kersley/ Farnworth area. Thank you so much.
