Hi Peter,

Sorry about the vagueness of my request - obviously a symptom of ageing!  The request was for Valentines - on the 1881 census the reference was RG11/4050/85 Page 6 (taken from the LDS online census).

Sarah A Valentine aged 50 Born Ashton U L
William Valentine         19  Sheffield York   Railway Porter
John T Valentine           17 Sheffield    Hair dresser
James Valentine            14 Norton    Derby  Cotton Piecer
Robert Valentine           13  Blackburn  Grocers Assist

Yours hopefully and apologetically,

Rosndel

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for the above census lookups.  With that info I was able to find the relevant marriages and birth on the Free BMD and also the Cheshire BMD.
It is my dream that perhaps I might even find a living relative in England!

Would you mind continuing the good work by looking up William Valentine and family on the 1891 and 1901 censuses.  In 1881 the family was in Derbyshire and the reference for the 1881 was RG11/4629/78 Page 24.

William was 35, born Orton, Cheshire, Steel tyre roller.  His wife Ann age 34 born in Norton Derbys. Their children were William age 12 born Norton, Derbys and Margt Ann age 6 born in Sheffield, York.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi Peter,

I have been reading back over the incredible amount of information that you have found for me and I will be forever grateful to you.  I am saving my pocket money to buy certificates as I am able - and also to do that search for Thomas Dean's birth.

It seems greedy to be online asking for more but I did a simple search of the 1851 census online and it would appear that Thomas Dean/e, born abt 1804 (1861 census) and 1807 (1851 census) , and his wife Mary, born about 1806(1861 census) and 1804, (1871 census) and 1809 (1851 census)...

(Are you as confused as I am?)

... and their children Sarah, Eliza, James, William, Elizabeth, and Mary all born between 1828 and 1848 in Bollington, may have moved from Cheshire to Derbyshire, and on this occasion with their name spelt Dean without the "e".

Could you please find them for me in the 1851 census. I would really like to know where they were in Derbyshire and what was Thomas' occupation.

Thanks again,

Rosndel

Hi

Here they are in 1851, plus a bonus of Mary's mum. All born in Bollington.

HO107-2153-Folio 266    Sundial Mellor Derbyshire

Thomas Dean head 44 ag lab Bollington
Mary               wife 42
Sarah             daug 23 power loom weaver
Eliza               daug 18 ~
James               son 13 ~
William              son 10 cotton piecer
Elizabeth        daug 8 scholar
Mary               daug 3
Sarah Boothby mother/in/law widow 70

The 1851 seems to confirm the mother of Mary as being a Sarah Boothby, I have had another look at the Bollington 1841 census and Sarah is living in the same street as Thomas and family, she may even be living with them it is difficult to see just where the line is drawn. She is on her own so suspect a widow.

Looking through the various marriage indexes for Cheshire there isn't one for a Sarah with a Boothy that "looks right".

hope this helps

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much. What a thrill to read of your find of Sarah Boothby. As you could not find a marriage, I began to look for a death - but if her death was registered it has not been transcribed on the Free BMD. Mellor is not listed on the Free BMD search Districts - do you know where the death would have been registered if she died in Mellor?

I found in Genuki that Mellor was in the Glassop parish which is listed as beginning 1n 1898 but Sarah was in Mellor in 1851. Hope you can help. And thanks again.

Rosndel.

Hi

A bit of a difficult one, I can tell you that she did not die in Bollington or any where else in Cheshire that is covered by the Cheshire bmd. It seems likely that she died either in Mellor Derbyshire or Ashton-under-lyne Lancashire sometime between 1851 and 1861 as there is no sign of her in the 61 census, the best way to find her would be access the English general register of BMD free at one of the Mormons family history centres or by subscription online at.
https://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/index.html OR http://www.bmdindex.co.uk/ Which is good value if your only looking for a few.

Obviously there will be more than one Sarah Boothby and to find the right one you will have to apply for a death certificate, when applying I would stipulate that you require a cert for your Sarah's age ie; 70-80 only.

This link will tell you the address of the local registration offices. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/RegOffice/

good luck
