I'm not sure where you have already looked but as William was born around 1787 in Highgate, if you haven't already done so, you could check Genuki to find out the name of the local Parish church. Then try to track down where the parish records are held and see if you can locate his baptism. That would be the logical first port of call I think ....  :-\

Highgate would just have been a village back in 1787. Doing a bit of reading, a couple of churches seem to have been built in the 1800s so you will need to do some research to find out about the area when William was born, to see if you can find out what church would have been there in 1787.

Hi

There looks to have been three children baptised to the couple at Highgate

9th January 1820
Elizabeth Hilliard

16th March 1823
William Hilliard

23rd July 1826
Samuel Hilyard

St Michael Highgate was built in 1832. Before that date Highgate was a chapelry lying partly in Pancras, Hornsey and Islington parishes but it did have a chapel of its own.

http://stmichaelhighgate.wordpress.com/history/

There is a baptism 19th September 1784 (born 17th August) St Mary Hornsey of a Samuel Hilliard to parents William and Mary. Other baptisms for this couple are spelt Hildyard and Hillyard at St Mary Hornsey. Mary Hillyard was baptised 21st October 1781 but the other children (Hildyard) were all baptised in October 1793.

13th October 1793
William Hildyard - no date of birth given

Next entry in the register

18th October 1793
John and Thomas Hildyard born 17th September 17? rest of entry lost in the central spine of the register.

The marriage of Willam Hildyard and Mary Sams was at St Mary Hornsey 3rd May 1780.

There is a burial at Highgate Chapel Hornsey 1st February 1816 of a John Hildyard aged 51 of Highgate.

Other Hildyard C19th burials at the same chapel

11th September 1816
Sarah Hildyard aged 32 Highgate

13th October 1816
Sarah Hildyard aged 6 weeks Highgate

At St Mary Hornsey early C19th burials

13th November 1793
John Hildyard from Highgate in this parish aged 21 months

8th January 1804
Samuel Hillyard from Islington parish aged 20

1st December 1805
Samuel Hildyard Simpson from Islington parish aged 14 months

7th December 1806
Elizabeth Hildyard from Islington parish aged 63

1st December 1811
Samuel Hilliard from Islington parish aged 74

There are burials in both Hornsey and Highgate chapelry in the C18th of the various spellings as well as in Islington and Pancras so there might be more possible Williams baptised in these parishes.

Regards

Valda

The church may be St Mary. Some information here starting at paragraph 8:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=22527

And some information about where to find records:
https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Highgate,_Middlesex

A general internet search will probably yield more information.

There are two grandaughters with them in 1851 - one looks like Jesse Harcoa*t, and the other Elizabeth Gras(?).

(sorry Valda - when I posted about St Mary yesterday I did so on my i-phone, and with the small screen I did not notice the comprehensive reply you had given tjtree. I would not have bothered with my reply had I seen yours first  ;))
