I hope you didn't mind me jumping in.  I have had a lot of fun putting them together!

This looks like William's burial.

William WATSON, 52
Abode: Sutton St Edmunds

From FreeBMD

Hello Tom  :)

Now here's another coincidence!

On the same page as William's burial at Sutton St Edmund (on the link from Tom) is a Sarah SPEECHLY, aged 16, buried 10 June 1844.

Anyhow - an interesting occurence of names.

Now this bit is pure speculation.  There is this death on FreeBMD
Dec qr 1932
Harriett S WATSON  84, reg    Wisbech    3b   587
Thus b abt 1848

LOOK  ;D

Here she is with Charles in 1881 at Monica Rd in Wisbech.

These comments are made speculatively and would need to be verified by certificate.  However they are all regarding a Harriet (various spellings) WATSON, born Sutton St Edmund c 1848.

1851 entry is intriguing.  Looks as though the head of the household ran a boarding house, and was looking after Harriet.
Little South St, Wisbech
Mary A HOWELL 52, head, formerly farmer's wife, b Cambs
Betsey Anthony   23 dau, dressmaker, b Norfolk, Stow Bardolph
Ann Howell    16, dau, dressmaker apprentice, b Cambs Littleport
James Hager 20 lodger, engine drive, b Scotland
Jane Hager   18 lodger, b Scotland
Harriott S Watson, 3, nurse child, b Lincolnshire St Edmund

1861 still with Mary A HOWELL but at another address
Chapel St, Walsoken, Norfolk
Mary Ann HOWELL, 63, independent
Harriet Speechly WATSON   13, visitor, b Lincolnshire Sutton St Edmund
Joseph Henry Thomas GADSBY   8, grandson, b Wisbech

This looks like her in 1871 at Church St, Spalding
Ashley MAPLES 33, solicitor and attorney at law
Margaret J  MAPLES 29
Ashley K MAPLES 3
Cyril Hy MAPLES 1
Ann Hubbard   24 housemaid
Ann Elizh Kirby   26 cook
Harriet WATSON, 23, nursemaid, b Sutton St Edmund, Lincs

Hmm - what do you think of this baptism - the dates, and places fit and it explains the SPEECHLY name.  Also the baptism was in Wisbech where Harriet was living by 1851; Eliza was a servant in another household in 1851.  She would have been 18 when Harriet was born in 1848.

County: Cambridgeshire
Place   Wisbech
Church: St Peter
BaptismDate   15 Mar 1848
Forename   Harriet
Sex   F
FatherForename   Benjamin
MotherForename   Eliza
FatherSurname   SPEECHLEY
MotherSurname   WATSON
Abode: Sutton St. Edmunds
Father Occupation: Farmer
Notes: Eliza a single woman from Timber Market
FileNumber   25857
It is not clear who the column "Abode" refers to - the child, the mother, the father   ???

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=9390004

Hope this helps - I think it is very possibly the unravelling of the WATSON family.

Judith

Thanks for the information. Yes I believe I am now at the end of the trail after a number of false starts.

Well now - here's a bit more.

I cannot find a marriage for William WATSON and a Margaret, however Emma (WATSON) EVANS death index entry gives her mother's name as Margaret MARSHALL.  In 1851 census Margaret's birthplace is listed as Sutton St Edmund, and her age as 49.  One of her children has the forename Marshall as well, so I would be happy to take that as probably correct.

FreeReg has this baptism:

Lincolnshire, Sutton St Edmund
Church: St Edmund
BaptismDate   07 Apr 1802
Forename   Margaret
Father: Joseph MARSHALL
MotherForename   Ann
Abode: Sutton St Edmund
FileNumber   18800

There are a number of children with parents Joseph and Ann MARSHALL.  This one gives the mother's surname:

Lincolnshire, Sutton St Edmund, Church: St Edmund
BaptismDate   23 Aug 1789
Elizabeth
Father Joseph MARSHALL
Mother: Ann CARDWELL
Abode   Sutton St Edmund
FileNumber   18800

and this marriage:
Lincolnshire, Sutton St Edmund, St Edmund Church
RegisterNumber   98
MarriageDate   26 Apr 1787
Joseph MARSHALL, single of Sutton St Edmunds
Ann CARDWELL, of Sutton St James
Witness One: Robert JOHNSON
Witness Two: Robert FITZJOHN
Notes: Banns published 8,15 and 22 Apr 1787
FileNumber   22628

Other children with same parents listed, all baptised at the same church
27 Apr 1788 William MARSHALL
08 May 1791 Mary MARSHALL
21 Jul 1793   James MARSHALL
20 Apr 1796  Ann MARSHALL
31 May 1798 Susanna MARSHALL
31 Aug 1800  Sarah MARSHALL
07 Apr 1802   Margaret MARSHALL
21 Jan 1805  Jane MARSHALL

Unfortunately Joseph's occupation is not shown so it is possible that there were two couples of the same names.

Hi Judb

The only thing I can add looking at the original marriage record on Lincstothepast, is that Jane Cardwell was from Sutton St James.

I did look at the baptisms but no occupation is shown for Joseph Marshall.
