John Doggett
« on: Monday 14 January 13 20:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me with this, my gt gt grandfather John Doggett was born 1799-1800 in St Michaels St.Albans, He Married Henrietta Bearp 18/05/1823 in St Marys Hornsey, I cannot seem to get any further back with him, I would dearly like to know who his parents were. The Doggetts were a well known family in the area of St Albans in fact there is a Doggetts Lane.they also went to Aus. where they became Mayor and Aldermen
Any help would really be appreciated

Hi

I could be wrong...

I think there are 2 John Doggett's here..
John b. St Albans is traceable through all censuses to 1881 in Herts/M'sex/Berks. He was with his wife, Harriet until 1861 but not in 1871, there are 2 possible deaths between those dates.
This may be his death..
FreeBMD:
Q2 1885 Doggett John aged 85, Windsor. 2c, 280

Another John Dogget b. abt. 1801, cambridgeshire, arrived in NSW, Australia in 1853, d. 1859, aged 58y.
Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: John Dogget
Death Date: 1859
Death Place: New South Wales
Registration Year: 1859
Registration Place: Parramatta, New South Wales
Registration number: 4420

There was also a John Doggett b. abt. 1799 Suffolk and married a Harriet (Fordham).

Hi Geoff
Many thanks for your reply, the first John Doggett is mine, the problem I have is that I cannot find a birth for him, all four Parishes have been checked,( more than once lol) considering it is quite a well known name in the area I have found it difficult to go back any further than his birth c1800, still I will keep on trying, I think I might need some guidence, thank you so much for your help

Hi Marcie

Firstly I should say, his wife was Henrietta not Harriet, another senior moment  :-[

I couldn't find a birth for him either, though the censuses are fairly consistent, that said, it does hamper going back on his side...

Hi Marcie

Have you seen the Doggett family baptised in St Peters St Albans on Family Search consisting of parents John & Catherine, children, Thomas 19th Feb 1792, Ann 5th July 1795 & Joseph 4th Feb 1798. You say that your John was born St Michael but the census only give St Albans so as St Peters & St Michael are so close I wonder if this could be his family & for some reason he wasn't baptised or he has been missed from the IGI.

I found the son Joseph married to a Susannah Pedder, 19th Oct 1822 at St Georges Hanover Square & on the census coincidentally, he is a Bricklayer as is your John. :-\

John Doggett senior married Catherine Cain 9th Sep 1791 St Peters St Albans, I have found a burial for whom I think is this John Doggett 3rd Jan 1822 aged 50 at St Peters & also one for Catherine buried 31 Dec 1842 aged 82 at St Peters, there is a note on the burial record for Catherine that also states Alias Hawe & I'm not sure just what that means. ???

It might be worth you contacting HALS who hold the original parish registers, they may do a check for you in the St Peters records for that missing baptism.

Hope this is some help.

Hi Maddie & Geoff
Thank you very much for your help, I had seen John Doggett and Catherine Cain, but wanted to be absolutely sure that they were the correct parents, but you are right, I shall contact Hals & ask if they could check, once again thank you both very much
