Jarrow Query
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 14:35 GMT (UK) »
I have just recently discovered that my gg.grandfather and his family spent some time in Jarrow during the 1860s, probably not more than a couple of years. Where can I find BMD records for the area?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the links, but, sadly, no results. I know for certain that two of my ancestor's children, a boy and girl, were born in Jarrow, but there appears to be no record of the events. It is also possible that another son, Reuben, died during that period. Why he went to Jarrow and then returned to Manchester,  I have no idea, except that he was an engineering blacksmith by trade, and he was possibly looking for work.

Have you looked on FreeBMD?

If you tell us the names, then maybe we can look as well?

The death of a Reuben Artus, aged 6, was registered in South Shields March ¼ 1868, is this one of yours?

Thanks for the offer. The names were Reuben Artus, age 3, who possibly died at Jarrow, Elijah Artus, born about 1866 and Louise (or Louisa) Artus born c. 1869. On the 1871 census return, the family were back in Manchester (less Reuben). http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/1871%25252520Census.html

Stan. Great work! Had posted before I'd seen your post. Thanks a million. It has been a puzzle for the last 10 years. Another one cleared up.
