4 Blue Row at The Grove 1871
« on: Tuesday 22 January 13 01:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello:  I recently found my great grandfather, Samuel Gibson, in the 1871 census.  His address is shown as 4 Blue Row, The Grove, in Hertfordshire.  His occupation is listed as "carman".  He is shown to be a boarder.  Can anyone clarify for me what it would have meant to live "at The Grove".  Would he have been employed by the estate?  I understand that "carman" could mean that he worked for a railway, or perhaps as some sort of delivery man.  He was only 26 years old at the time and lived with other boarders at this address.  Is Blue Row still standing?  I cannot find it on Google Earth.  Why would anyone reside at "The Grove" if they did not work there?  Is, or was, there a railway station at The Grove?  Thank you in advance.

Just to note-I think Samuel is at The Grove Blue Row, West Ham, Stratford (Essex) in 1871.

Ahh, thank you.  That makes more sense as Samuel Gibson was born in Essex.  I had wondered what he was doing in Hertfordshire which is where I knew "The Grove" to be.  Clearly, we are talking about a different "Grove".  What I still don't know is what was "The Grove" in West Ham.  Was it a neighbourhood, or a district of some kind?  What trades went on there.  What would a carmen do in that area?

Hi

Samuel is at 4 Blue Row, The Grove, West Ham, Stratford (Essex) in 1871,
as it says on the tin [census sheet RG10 1624  76 p41].

There is more than one "The Grove" in [that implied corner of] Hertfordshire,
"The Grove" [current commercial title] Langleybury
is very close [a mile] to a 19c dwelling called "The Grove" Chandler's Cross
and 2 miles from 19c "The Grove" Croxley Green.
