Indeed, and I would now assume someone has already purchased said death certificate and that is where the apparent parents names come from (hopefully they will have remembered that the info given on the death certificate is only as good as the knowledge of the person giving it, be that family member or otherwise).

This one has a reasonable amount of information. You could contact them to find out their sources:

It could be a case of incorrect information being copied and spread over the web. I think many of us have found cases like this in our ancestry.  :)

It's always wise to do your own research, or at least double check what others have found and back it up with some certificates.

So you might be right scotmum, maybe some of the details on the d/c are wrong which may be why everyone is stuck. It could be worth finding out who the informant on Hodgen's d/c is, though sometimes even close family members can get things wrong.   :)

I would still like to know what leads to the thinking that Hodgen was born in England. There must be a reason.

And I will throw a cat among the pigeons and say it might be worth checking out this marriage too....

I would agree scotmum.  :)

A question: Would the children's births/christenings at this time in Scotland give any information about the origins of the parents? I am thinking that it would be worth checking each of Hodgen's children's births in case there is mention of his origins.

I don't feel like wading through all the online trees and posts containing Hodgen, but do any of them give him any siblings?
