Henryshott Street??
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 00:09 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with the area Henryshott?? I found it listed on a census record. Trying to determine how close it was to Station Street.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi mcgilleyclan

This question has come up on other forums, not RC. These were the responses:

This name refers to a strip of land in West Bridgend, Dumbarton, between the road and the River Leven, not far from the old bridge. It is a name formed from the personal name "Henry", and the Scots word shot. This word appears to have had the meaning of "piece of land from which one can shoot (cast) a fishing net into the water". It implies too, more than likely, the possession of the fishing rights by the landowner.

Who "Henry" was, however, is unknown. Absolutely certain, however, is the fact that the present-day Henryshot, the short street with tenement building in West Bridgend, is named after the land, and situated exactly there.

And also:

Henryshott was the name of a street of houses built by Peter Denny for his workers in the shipyard. The areas was known as Little Dublin for the amount of Irish people who lived there. My GGGrandfather Patrick Lynn wasa gardner for Peter Denny and had his family home at 20 Levenhaugh Street an other street of houses. I think the other was William Street. The houses existed in Dumbarton until the mid 60s.

Hope you can work out the location from the above references.

Monica  :)
