Hi jgm

Do you have some dates?

Do you mean William John is the son?  I looks to me as if you may have gleaned the father's name & occupation off a marriage certificate for William John (perhaps not a Scottish certificate?)

Cheers

Thanks Ev & jgm

jgm - What year was the son born and do you know when & where?

The marriage certificate will state the father's name & occupation. But it doesn't  usually state where he was (is) from - where did 'Renton' come from?

Especially because this is a recent event (William's birth and later marriage), it makes it harder to get the 'start' and therefore there is the need to start with William John first!

His date and place of birth are important to  acertain - I am assuming he is deceased? When & where did he die?
Did he serve in WW2?
Did he have an accent (Scottish, English etc) or any other clues as to his origins?
Do you know if he had any siblings?

Just because WJ was in Renton in 1940, doesn't mean his father was from there, or indeed was ever there (unless you have some other anecdotal evidence to the contrary).

To illustrate what I mean re: the need to more firmly establish who WJ was:

If we say just for argumant's sake, WJ's father was from Renton.....then in 1901 the following Robert GRAHAM's are all in Renton. Any one of them could have been producing his own children by 1912!  All of them are associated with the Ship Yard trade - where rivetting was a core occupation.

1901: 1 Back Street, Renton
Robert GRAHAM 34, b Ireland, Ship Yard Labourer
Wife: Mary 28, b Renton
Boarder: Anthony O'HARA 24, b Greeenock, Ship Yard Redditer (Rivetter??)
Boarder: John GEORGE 3, b Glasgow Lanarkshire

1901: 48 Back St, Renton
Robert GRAHAM 15, Ship Yard Labourer, b Renton
Son of John  (Calico Printer) & Margaret GRAHAM

1901: 17 Station Street, Renton
Robert GRAHAM 14, Rivet Boy Ship Yard, b Greenock
Son of Ellen GRAHAM (she also had a Gr Dau named FEENIE in the household).

1901: 19 Burn Street
Robert GRAHAM 10, Scholar, b Renton
Son of Arthur (Shipyard Labourer) & Janet GRAHAM (who had a large brood age btw 20 & 6)
