Alfred? Robert Crane
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 14:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Can anyone shed any light on "the missing years" between the 1851 census & the 1881 census.
Alfred Robert Crane born in St Giles Marylebone in 1849, son of Henry ( a cordwainer ) & Hester Crane. Robert Crane ( His middle name seems to have been preferrred ) married Jane Chatton in South Shields, Durham in October 1871. His name appears on ships in port in North Shields in the 1881 census, but why is there no record of him between his childhood in London & his marriage?

If he worked on ships, then the most logical explanation is that he was away at sea on census night for those years.

THe 1851 census clearly shows two different children aged 2, Alfred and Robert, seemingly twins.

previous research seems to indicate that Alfred & Robert were in fact the same person.
Surely, Alfred/Robert could not have been at sea during the 1861 census as he would only have been 12 years old?

Hmm, I just saw that there is only one birth index entry .

They did go to sea as a 'boy' at that sort of age.
