« on: Friday 25 January 13 18:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Can anyone help me please?
I am trying to find a birth or baptism for Samuel Herbert Hyde b abt 1844 - 1848 in Wicklow.
according to his marriage cert his father was also Samuel Herbert Hyde and was apparently deceased when junior got married in 1884 [Kensington, London]
I have SHH jun on english census from 1881 and he always say b Wicklow.
I have tried the familysearch site but registration starts from 1845 and I cannot find him.

Help!!!

Registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845. Registration of births didn't start until 1864.
You usually require the denomination and more detailed location (e.g. town, townland or parish) to search for a baptism.

see :  Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

Do you have an occupation for Samuel snr on that marriage cert ?

Hi Shane

unfortunatly no occupation for senior only 'deceased'
it looks like it might be an impossible task.
I haven't got the foggiest what denomination they might have been but he married in a c of E church in london and I don't have a better location either

Thank you for your reply, I will look at your suggested reading

Just one Samuel Hyde baptism (no middle name) showing up in Co. Wicklow on the free index of RootsIreland pay-website - and that's in 1839, and father's name doesn't match Samuel. It's possible your Samuel was baptised in one of the parishes not included on the website, or where records dont go back far enough.

Did you locate your Samuel on the 1911 English census ?
It often has a more detailed place of birth...

Hi Shane

Yes, I did locate him on 1911. unfortunatly he was in Kensington Workhouse. his place of birth was given as Ireland, co. Wickton - not a lot of help and even a mis-translation.

I will give up gracefully for now and go back to it in a few years, unless I get lucky at the WDYTYA exhibition in Feb

Unfortunately no sign of any Hydes in Co. Wicklow on Griffith's valuation or the Tithes, which might have helped. Griffith's was around the 1850s (the exact date depends on the location), and Samuel snr may have died by then, and the tithe records were earlier c1823-1837, but only cover agricultural areas.
