Ketcham or Higham parish in 1732
« on: Saturday 26 January 13 18:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
The familysearch/IGI search has an entry on 22nd May 1732 for a marriage between a FRANCIS STOW and BRIDGETT CARTER. The location is given as "KETCHAM, SUFFOLK" but I can't figure out where this might be. The batch seems to have records from all over Suffolk.
HIGHAM parish would make more sense, if its the Francis I'm looking for. Does anyone have any idea where Ketcham might refer to, or have access to the Higham records to see if it is indeed that parish?
Thanks
Roy

They appear to have lived in Gt Wenham - found these entries on Suffolk Burial Index - of course it may not be the parish in which they married but it is very close to Higham:

Francis STOW buried 8 Dec 1749  Gt Wenham, St John
Bridgett STOW, daug of Francis & Bridgett, 27 Jun 1752 Gt Wenham, St John.

These are the only 2 STOW(E)  burials recorded on the SBI in Gt Wenham

Bridgett STOW (noted as wife of Francis) was buried 30 Jan 1774 Stoke by Nayland, St Mary.

Apart from Higham & Wenham there is also a Layham close by & just over the border in Essex there is Dedham & Langham.

There are STOWs in Raydon, also close by - Francis STOW buried 20 Aug 1714 Raydon, St Mary and an overwhelming number of burials in Polstead going back to 1662 including a Francis STOW in 1669, another in 1684 etc.

Thanks Keziah, very useful.
My assumption was that they had lived in Great Wenham, but never thought of that as being a possibility for mis-spelling as Ketcham - I guess if it's scribbled!
Hopefully someone has access to Great Wenham, Higham or Layham that might be able to check!
I'll can check Dedham and Langham next time I'm on Essex Ancestors.
Roy

I also think HITCHAM as suggested by Sue might be a strong possibility as it is not that far north of those parishes.   I found 1 Carter burial there:  Elizabeth daughter of Joseph 7 May 1718.

Hi

I am also looking for a Francis Stow who was married a Mary Alderton, they were both born around 1745 and lived in the Suffolk area (the family seem to come from around Hadleigh/Polstead area).  Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

I looked at the Hitcham parish register today and can confirm that Francis Stow of (unfortunately couldn't read  >:( - but ended in "mford" and Bridgett Carter married there in 1732.

Hi Anne
Thanks for that.
Any chance that the "mford" might have been Stratford? I'm working on the theory that Francis and Bridgit had children in Stratford-St-Mary from 1732 onwards...
Cheers
