Belleek question - Carrenbeg
« on: Saturday 26 January 13 21:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I found an ancestor listed in the 1900 and 1910 Belleek directories.  It says Carrenbeg after his name (Monaghan, Denis, Carrenbeg)

Does anyone know what Carrenbeg is please?  I'm guessing a street/house/farm/area in Belleek, but would appreciate further details, perhaps someone will have some local knowledge?

Many thanks,
Charlotte

Carran Beg is the name of a townland in the civil parish of Inishmacsaint and Poor Law Union/Registration District of Ballyshannon.

And here is Denis and family there in the 1901 census:

If you check the House and Building Return (Form B1) and the Out-Offices and Farm-Steadings Return (Form B2), they should give you an idea of size of property etc.

Thank you both for helping, and clarifying that for me.  Unfortunately it's not my Denis though.
I have Denis Monaghan in Belleek Town, age 51 in the 1901 census, married to Ellen.  He's still in Belleek for the 1911 census.

When I came across the Belleek directories, I thought it was him, but I didn't know about the other Denis Monaghan!  I guess my one isn't listed there.

thanks again!

Here's your Denis Monaghan in 1901- he's listed as railway carpenter so unlikely to appear in a directory listing local businessmen, farmers, etc.

Just in case you haven't found it, he's a widower in 1911-

Could this be him?

Thanks, I'll make note of the proni site's info, but I don't know if that would be him for sure.

Yes those are the correct census details.  The directories were lists of the Inhabitants of Belleek, so I wasn't factoring in his occupation.
