William LANGLEY
« on: Monday 28 January 13 03:35 GMT (UK) »
Am looking to confirm that William LANGLEY b. 1819 Paddington London,
1. who was indentured to the South Australian Company in 1836,
2. who was an Assisted Emigrant in 1836, and came to South Australia on the ship SARAH AND ELIZABETH (which was owned by the SA Co. at that time)
3. who arrived in SA on board ship D'AUVERGNE
4. who married Elizabeth HEPPLEWHITE in Tasmania in 1847 and then came to SA on the ship WILLWATCH
is actually one and the same person...
There is a signature on the Indenture record, and there is a marriage document and indenture document held at the State Library in SA, but there are no signatures on the marriage document.
Nor does it indicate that these are one and the same, only that the documents are at the State Library.
William and Elizabeth were married at Launceston - are there records for marriages in 1847?  Eliz. was a convict with 'Ticket of Leave' when they married - would there have been an application for her to marry.
There are several William Langley who were also convicts, but do not know if these are also in this story...
On the indenture record William Langley is aged 17, in July 1836...
I have no indication of parents names... any suggestions to help further this research would be appreciated.
Regards

Tasportal has this convict information:

Elizabeth HEPPLEWHITE arrived VDL on the Navarino, 17 Jan 1841, left London 9 Oct 1840.

From Description Lists of Female Convicts
Elizabeth HEPPLEWHITE, 18, house servant, fair complexion, round head, lt brown hair, oval visage, low brow, dark brown eyebrows, hazel eyes, thick nose, medium mouth, long chin, scar on left thumb about middle.  The words "Co Durham" are written on the same page.

Her Conduct record (on p42)  It's quite difficult to read parts of it so you will probably have a read yourself. I have not transcribed the whole record.

Convicted Durham QS (?quarter sessions) 29 June 1840
May 7 1841/ Rich'd Frederick/Absent without leave and found in the house of Samuel Prinder, Charles St/16 days ????
Nov 16 1841 Longford Gaol, larceny discharged/CA?/ December 1841
13 July 1843 Longford Gaol, disobeying orders.
December 1844, disturbing the peace, fined
March 1845, disorderly house, 14 days hard labour,
Certificate of Freedom 6 July 1847

Application to marry, Nov 1846
Elizabeth HEPPLEWHITE, arr Navarino
William LANGLEY free

The family Links section suggest one male child M LANGLEY, born 1845, marriage 1847.

There is a Departures section on TasPortal.

Thanks Judith
I hadn't found her description or detail re the marriage application... so that adds to the story.  Also that William Langley was free... They came to SA in 1847 and had several children here, but will now chase up the M. Langley b. 1845...
Thanks for your interest.  I wasn't sure where to find some info that confirmed what I suspected...

Hi Paula,

The Schooner Challenger sailed from Adelaide arriving 7th June 1841 into Launceston via Port Phillip, one of the passengers was a Mr Langley!

Look under Port of Launceston

Many thanks Dee and Gerry,
The story is developing.
I agree that W and M are often transposed, and the BISA info is worth considering... the other children are correct.
With the arrival into Launceston - at least it fits with all the other dates... I did wonder if he was part of a crew, as he was on his arrival into SA... but don't have any proof of anything re his career as part of a crew!

In the Tas. records, "M" stands for "Male" (child unnamed when registered), "F" is for "Female" child.

That makes sense ...
Have been looking for William Langley, the son, on Trove, but have yet to decide if I have the right person!

I can't see any sign of William Henry, the son, in South Aust. BMD indexes.   :-\
