Sealey Family - 66 Halidon St, Hackney
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 04:00 GMT (UK) »
In the 1911 Census Thomas Sealey a Bootmaker is residing with his wife Ellen and daughter May at 66 Halidon Street - living in 4 rooms.  I have Googled and found that this address was the  Headquarters of the Homerton Corps of the Salvation Army.

Does this mean that the family were Salvationists and living on the premises I wonder ?

Thanks for any help.

There's another household at the same address in 1911; search for Overett. The head of that household also has a regular occupation.

I wonder whether it wasn't a building that had storefront offices and flats above.

Hello Janey

You may well be right and there were possibly families occupying flats within the building.

Hope to find out more with some extra Googling..........  :) :)

I would think he only lodged there and worked at the SA. The SA was further along Lower Clapton Road in Linscott Road.
Looks like Thomas Sealey in electoral rolls in Wells Street earlier?

I thought the same as Jennifer at first but this doc
http://health.hackneysociety.org/documents/Locations_of_the_Salvation_Army_in_Hackney.doc
identifies the address:

"66 Halidon Street: Headquarters of the Homerton Corps of the Salvation Army, existed 1897"

I might wonder whether that was assumed from the fact that it was the address given for the man who was interviewed in 1897 -
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=search_catalogue_pages&args=salvation+army+haggerston+corps+,or,60,80

"Interview with Captain Joseph Riley of Homerton Corps of Salvation Army, 66 Halidon Street, Hackney, 16 September 1897"

but he, conversely, was living elsewhere in 1901 at least. If he was the Joseph Riley c1842 in Hackney in 1901 (the only Joseph Riley in the vicinity), a boot machinist.

But nope, he was living at 1 Lamb Lane in both 1891 and 1901, so it does indeed look like the Halidon St address was an institutional address.

Thank you again Janey.

Every little bit of information helps. As you say, more than likely an institutional address. I'll continue looking for any more clues. :)
