Another brick in the wall
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 04:14 GMT (UK) »
I've been trying, on and off, for years to trace this person without any luck at all. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions - other than to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate?

My Grandmother, Caroline Elizabeth HALL, was born 28 Jan 1892 in Froxfield, Hampshire. She married a James FOWLER (FOWLES) but was subsequently divorced.

Registered in September 1923 in Frome, Somerset is her second marriage to Arthur George MOBEY. This is the guy I've been unable to trace and I've looked everywhere I can think of without remembering, exactly, where.

In 1924 Robert Arthur MOBEY was born - registered in Shepton Mallet, Somerset - and that's all I know until her 3rd marriage, in 1951, to George WATKINS who I believe she met in Woodstock.

As I said, any help would be much appreciated.

Simon

Freebmd has births of more than one Arthur George Mobeys, and you don't know which is yours.  So to find out more about him you will need to follow the only lead you have at present, which s the marriage cert. Hopefully the cert will give you an age at marriage, a fathers name and an occupation.
Without finding what you can about him from the only led you have, you can't really do any meaningful research on him it would be no more than guesswork, and may be following completely the wrong person.

Hi Simon

It is a known fact that freebmd isn't complete yet, so I checked births for Arthur George Mobey on another source.

There are 11 Arthur Mobey's born between 1854 and 1909 but none with George as middle name. There are no Arthur Mobey's born after 1909.

If you don't have a birth or marriage cert, how do you know his middle name is George?

There's a newspaper article on the 1947 action - from the free search on British Newspaper Archive i see

Arthur George Mobey, Alderton, near Tewkesbury against Caroline Elizabeth Mobey, Luddington, near Stratford-on- Avon.

Of the 11 births, there are probably deaths for 9 of them and 1 who leaves the county  which just leaves Arthur Henry born 1857 at Leighton Buzzard (and I'm almost sure he's way too old for this)

Thanks for all the input. Not sure what you (Lizdb) entered into FreeBMD to hit more than one Arthur George MOBEY, I can't find one, not even when using All Types and entering no dates. If I search on MOBEY or MOBY I do get a number of hits (although none with the correct forenames) and of these a large number seem to come from in or around Woodstock. I know that my Gran lived in Woodstock with AGM so there is a possibility that they returned, from Somerset, to his roots there. Incidentally I seem to recall from my Army days that Shepton Mallet was something to do with the Military Police: am I correct in this thinking?

It's looking as though I'm going to have to grt that Marriage Certificate!

Sorry, I was looking at Alfred George Mobey, not Arthur!

Well I grt the Marriage certificate but I still can't find the guy! Maybe someone else will be able to find him?

The marriage took place on August 7 1923 in the district of Frome in Somerset.

At that time Arthur George MOBEY was a widower and 33 years of age. He was a horseman on a farm and living in Nunney nr Frome. His father was George MOBEY (presumably still living) and he was a 'Stockman on Farm'.

Any help greatly appreciated
