Lost Osmond's of Tunbridge Wells
« on: Thursday 08 July 04 15:43 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am after some help or advise in trying to locate a line of my Osmond family that were last in Tunbridge Wells, but seem to have
disappeared without a trace

Henry Avis Osmond b 15 9 1846 Uckfield Sussex
Married Sarah (Susan Sarah) Martin Tunbridge Wells
21 4 1866

The family are on the 1881 Census

Henry OSMOND   Head   W   Male   34   Uckfield, Sussex, England   Carpenter
Sarah J. OSMOND   Daur   U   Female   13   Tun Wells, Kent, England
Edward A. OSMOND   Son      Male   11   Tun Wells, Kent, England
Louisa M. OSMOND   Daur      Female   8   Tun Wells, Kent, England
Arthur A. OSMOND   Son      Male   5   Tun Wells, Kent, England
William A. OSMOND   Son      Male   3   Tun Wells, Kent, England

Albert Street Provedence Cottage, Tonbridge, Kent
  RG11/915 folio 18 page 29

Henry's wife died prior to the Census, and this is the last I can find of this line of Osmond's. I can't find them on the 1891 or 1901 Census and it seems strange that a whole family have vanished.

Can anyone suggest where I should search?

Look forward to hearing from someone

Best wishes David

Hi with reference to my post back in 2004... I still haven't found my lost Osmond's

I was advised that they could have left the UK soon after the 1881 Census as there don't appear to be on the 1891 or 1901

So living in Kent, any idea what ports may have been used or any idea's where I should check? Do many shipping records exist, were Passports used back then?

I've not done any research in a while so just getting back into the swing of things again

So I am open to suggestions to try out

Many thanks again

A few avenues to explore:

findmypast.com

has Passenger Lists Leaving UK 1890-1960 (maybe too late)
Register of passport applications 1851-1903.  This a pay per view/subscription site

Do you where they may have emmigrated to?

You could ask for a look up in the US census.

There are some online passenger lists for Australia.

Emmigrants did not always leave from their nearest port.  I have Kent relatives who left from Liverpool.

Middx - VAUS, ROBERTS, EVERSFIELD, INMAN, STAR, HOLBECK, WYATT, BICKFORD, SMITH, REDWOOD
Hants - SMALL, HAMMERTON, GRIST, FRYER, TRODD, DAGWELL, PARKER, WOODFORD, CROUTEAR, BECK, BENDELL, KEEPING, HARDING, BULL
Kent - BAYLY, BORER, MITCHELL, PLANE, VERNON, FARRANCE, CHAPMAN, MEDHURST, LOMAX, WYATT, IDEN
Devon - TOPE, BICKFORD, FOSTER
YKS - QUIRK, McGUIRE, BENN
Nott/Derbs - SLACK
Herts - BARNES

Hello Kat,

No idea where they went too... 1890 maybe too late but worth checking, the passenger lists in case.
And again the passport application if they were in use back in the 1800's

I'll check to see if these records are at Kew as I'm not far from there.

I'll look at the findmypast site too

Re the Census familysearch.org has the US census but for 1880 (too early for me) I'll have to see if the 1890 / 1900 Census is on-line anywhere

Thanks again

Dave

Hi David
Don't know if there is any connection but my wife has the following Osmond ancestry from Tunbridge.
John Osmond born abt 1808, marrie Fanny Wickenden on the 15 Feb 1836 at Tunbridge. Have John's father as being Thomas Osmond? and mother unknown.
They left for Australia as per the below details. Not sure if there is any connection to your lot.

Hi,

Were they using their second names in the 1881 census? I can't find births that match if they are first names but I can find these,

Henry Edward A OSMOND  Jun Q 1870  Tonbridge  2a/529

Mary Louisa OSMOND  Jun Q 1873  Tonbridge  2a/513

Edwin Arthur A OSMOND  Sep Q 1875  Tonbridge  2a/560

Charles William A OSMOND  Dec Q 1877  Tonbridge  2a/592

Henry Edward A OSMOND is the only Henry E b. abt 1870 in England that I can see so I wonder if this is him in Canada in 1911?
