Boughton Monchelsea marriage lookup please for May/Veness
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for more information on the marriage of William May and Eleanor Veness in Boughton Monchelsea. From FamilySearch they were married on 19 Mar 1831. I would like to know if the parish register gives any information on where they came from (Maidstone?) and their marital status, as I think Eleanor was a widow at the time of this marriage.

Thanks

From a transcription, the marriage was by Banns, and

William May was a Widower of the Parish and
Eleanor Veness was a Widow of the Parish

The witnesses were possibly a Mary Wight,  ??? and John Beeching who was almost certainly the Parish Clerk, having witnessed many more marriages.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Tony  :)

A bit more information.

There is a marriage in East Peckham (transcribed) as follows

Thomas VENNESS to Eleanor ANDSCOMB
7 Apr 1805
Witnesses were William Andscomb and John Durtnall (probably the P.C.)

Then a burial (as transcribed) in the same Parish of

Thomas VENUS 10 February 1828 aged 54.

There were seven children baptised again in East Peckham

Elizabeth 4 Aug 1816
Jane 23 Aug 1818
William 26 Feb 1820
Edward 28 Oct 1821
Thomas 2 June 1823
Norman Richard Stephen? 12 Sept 1824
James 4 Mar 1827

It looks like the couple had children earlier, but baptised in Hadlow.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Tony  :)

Thanks Tony, most of the information I have is from FamilySearch where Stephen's name is given as Norman Percival Stephen. I also have the following baptised in Hadlow:

Thomas 25 Nov 1806
John 11 Sep 1808 (parent given as John and Eleanor, maybe an error in transcription?)
George 19 May 1811 (burial 27 Jun 1813)
Eleanor 28 Jan 1813
Eliza 25 Dec 1814

plus a further burial for a John Venus aged 0 on 10 Nov 1805, who may or may not be from the same family.

Do any of the transcripts from East Peckham (or Hadlow) give the occupation of Thomas?

Thanks again for the information

On all the baptisms (at East Peckham) Thomas' Occupation was recorded as Labourer.

Hello, I am not sure how this site works? I was referred here because a gentleman who I have been emailing regarding my ancestor, Thomas Veness/Venus born 1806 in Hadlow, thought there might be some help through this site. The posting he mentioned was by 'Lostsheep2.' I have tracked Thomas Venus with wife Eleanor Anscombe, married in 1805, but don't have any connections back any further. The name of this line changed in/around 1861 to Veness, and was just an error based on dialect or just mispelled. I am not sure what kind of question to ask of this site, or if I should ask? Thank you and I hope all is well with youO. Nikki
