My x Grandad - on 3 Census returns - went by his Grandmother's surname !! and moved Counties (to escape debt) - he was a Miller and the Corn tax left him bankrupt - so anything is possible.

so James was married and discharged 1866 as an Invalid - did he return to England?

This looks promising, but I just need some sort of link from James to Thomas (b.1843/44), but cannot find a relevant birth in Burton upon Trent for Gladdin/Gladwin

It wasn't until 1874 it became compulsary to register a birth.  I have a Great Uncle who was born illigitimate in 1897 and his birth nor baptism is registered.  I have his death certificate with his date of birth.

Thomas GLADWYN - enlisted February 1858 and according to the National Archives he was 13 years and 10 months :  c April 1844

Date of 1851 Census was 30 March - so 'Tom' should be 6 years old.

1861 Census, Burton upon Trent, Derbyshire

Ann GLADDIN - unmarried, 41, Charwoman & Laundress, born Staffs, Burton upon Trent

? where is Ann in 1851

Staffordshire B.M.D. shows four Gladdin births;-
Elizabeth b. 1840
Emma b. 1842
Ann b. 1845
Charles b. 1847
these could be part of the family.

Well, we're over 11 years since the original post, and still no closer to finding a) Thomas Gladwin's birth, b) parents or c) whereabouts in 1851 census.

Anyone had a moment of inspiration?
