Mary O'Brien, born Barnes Surrey abt 1856
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 20:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can anyone help please?
Mary O'Brien married James O'Brien  (no relation) at St. Wilfred's Church, Auckland, Durham. Ater that date they appear in 1881, 1891, 1901 &1911 census.

The marriage cert states Mary's father is John O'brien.
Place of birth for Mary is Barnes, Surrey but cant find birth reg in any of the usual places.

Beginning to wonder if she was registered. She was RC religion so would have been Baptised. I don't know the area so have no idea which church.
Would Richmond have been the Reg area for Barnes?
In short, I have no trace of Mary before marriage.

FreeBMD says "The district Richmond S. is an alternative name for Richmond Sry and it is in the county of Surrey."
It includes Barnes.

Could she have been a couple of years out with her age? There is this birth reg
Births Sep 1/4 1858
Mary Ann O'Brien Richmond S 2a/_00

But in 1891 she says born London Surrey so there is this birth reg
Births Sep 1/4 1856
Mary Ann O'Brien Lambeth    1d/277

Thanks Crisane
Yes the age could be different, various ages on census common as you know.
Name on Marriage cert is just Mary but aware that sometimes  only preferred names were used.
Her father's occupaton, Gardener.

1881 Census shows Mary age 28 and James 25 yet age at marriage was 22 for both of them!!
By my reckoning they should both be 25. This now gives new poss birth about 1853

also the enumerator has put his mark through place of birth for Mary which I think is Camden.
The surname is shown as Brian but my friend is quite confident it is the correct family because of the children's date and place of birth. William is her ancestor.

Is Camden near to Barnes?

When did she marry?  Do the witnesses help?

Personally I would not be looking at the Camden one as a priority.  Births were not always registered this early on.  London, Surrey could easily cover Barnes area.  Camden is Middlesex.

Thanks rosie99 that was useful info about Camden.

The problem now is to find the location of her baptism and would be grateful for any help with that as we are at the other end of the country.

The Marriage was in July 1878. Both James and Mary signed their names.
The names of the witnesses mean nothing - not family names, but still trying to find possible links.
witnesses; William Murtagh & Mary Henry

According to google maps about 10 miles + depending on the route.

The crossing out of Camden as Mary's birth place looks to me like a genuine crossing out not one of the marks made when someone is ticking off what has been done.

Hi crisane,
 thanks for that info.
as Barnes has been given more consistenly as place of birth think that is way to search first anyway.

Also need to add, James & Mary eventually left the north east to live with/near their son. Their last known address was in Walthamstow.
