How is it missing? COMPLETED WITH MANY THANKS.
« on: Friday 08 February 13 18:30 GMT (UK) »
My brother-in-law reached the age of 68 on Feb. 6th, but we wanted to check his age. I searched FindMyPast, Ancestry and Free BMD and the full registry on Ancestry. He was nowhere to be found. Seeing him later in the day I told him whereupon he produced his Birth Certificate (Original) showing all the names and dates we had inputted.  How come, that as he was definately registered (Feb 22 1945) in his local area, his record has failed to make the lists?

IF this is not the right place to ask, please move to correct forum. Pete.

By the "full registry on Ancestry" do you mean the index or did you browse the sheets one by one as sometimes the indexes do not fully reflect what is on thye sheets.

Have you looked at the Registrars online for the area concerned as some have searchable indexes, Is it there ?
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Did you check the right quarter - as his birth is in February it will show up in the April-May-June quarter.

I've found him  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Try looking for him with the first letter of his surname beginning with S and not D.

Don't ask  ??? ??? ??? ???

I couldn't find him where I'd hoped,so tried just births in that 1/4 with the mmn of D....and found him in the S's.

His birth is registered in March 1/4 as it should be with all Jan, Feb and March births !

If his parents registered the birth within 16 days (which they seem to have done Feb 6th to Feb 22nd) the birth should be recorded in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter. If the registration had been late ie over the required 42 days allowed and into April then it would appear in the next quarter.

However it is known that, as the registrations were then manually compiled into the GRO index, there are errors, for example if handwriting can't be read easily so the entry may be there as a variant spelling, or omissions - just missed off.

Well done Carole, you proved my point.

Not sure how a D can be misread for an S ???

I do like solving mysteries though  ;)
