At least we have eliminated a couple of William BESTs.
His surname does make searching Trove Newspapers a bit of a battle!    ;D

Okay, maybe he came over to SA as a widower, and never married again until Martha. Or it is as you said.
I am going to see whether I can get a death certificate for William (do you think that is the same William?)

Tell me about it Dee, shocking to try and find things.

The only Wm BEST who was a miner from Cornwall arrived on the JOHN BANKS  Yes he was possibly a widower when he emigrated.

I suggest you purchase a transcription of the NSW death certificate which is cheaper than a certified certificate from one of the three accredited agents on this link

A possibility

1841 Census  HO107 /144/6/39/12
Living at Fore Street, St Ives  Cornwall
BEST Peter  40 years  Saddler  Born county
BEST Elizabeth  35 years   Born county
BEST William  10 years  Born county
BEST ?Peleom  1 year  Born county
BEYNERD Grace  21  Servant  Born county

This is not the William who came to South Australia.   :(

I've now found his marriage on the Cornwall OPC in 1860 to a Hester Ann HODGE, his father's name is given as Peter, and his brother Palemon is a witness!

I've also found them both on the 1881 Census!

Another elimination!   ::)

Another one bites the dust ;D

Unfortunately once again SA Archives website is not working  :-X :-X :-X so can't check there for another Wm BEST immigration.  Of course he may have arrived in another State and his age may not have been accurate on the marriage cert.

Hopefully his death cert MAY have his place of birth in Cornwall. :)

Cheers :)

OK...shall we try this one?   ;D

1841 Wales Census has…..

Peter Best  aged 30 blacksmith
Eliza Best aged 40
William Best aged 10
Living in Llanfabon, Glamorgan
None of them born in the county of Glamorganshire

Parents back in Shrewsbury St Julian, Cornwall in 1851,
Peter born Stleath, Cornwall, England
Eliza born Camelford, Cornwall,
William isn’t with them

It's worth a try.    ;)

Baptism is also on the Cornwall OPC site for the Parish of St. Teath.
But I can't see a marriage.

Just because he wasn't with them in 1851 doesn't mean he wasn't elsewhere.
