Sorry Dee I did not see your post.  Too busy searching :-[

This is possibly William arriving alone.  Age and county of birth are a match.

No worries, Cando.....it was a good idea to post it as it might help in the search.

There are only two BEST births with father William in the right time frame that could possibly be considered, but again....nothing to link them at this stage.

Dee     :)

The following birth can be discounted....and hence the father William BEST......

William BEST born 20th August 1853 to William BEST & Betsy DYER on board the Magdalena
Ref = Ade  5/13

This couple went to Victoria and had 3 more children, and I can't find any more about them. However, I've traced them back to Cornwall, and found the marriage of William BEST and Betsey DIER in 1852 both on FreeBMD and Cornwall OPC.
Father of William on the OPC record is John BEST.

Blake, we're just trying to eliminate anything that turns up in the records in the hope of finding something positive.

cando and deeiulka I think you might be onto something here.
That death in Silverton seems right. It does make sense that he a Cornish Miner would be up at Silverton. Also his probates showed that he wasn't an overly rich man, perhaps he left his wife just to get some money so they could live better.
There aren't marriages that happened there (Renmark/Kapunda) or stated that he came from there.

Thanks very much. I think I also found his baptism: http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=2867044

This is the other William BEST having a child in South Australia in the right time frame….

William BEST born 20th February 1865 to William BEST & Ellen BRISCOE at Robertsons Plains
Ref = Rob  35/25

This child died in Mt Gambier on 1st February 1866 at 1 year of age
Ref = Gre 22/367

I found the marriage of this couple in Victoria…..
William BEST married Ellen BRISCOE in 1861.
Ref = 2636

Unfortunately the place of birth wasn’t listed for either of them.

This child was born to William and Ellen in Victoria…..
Jamesina BEST born 1863 at SAND
Ref = 1100

After the death of the child William in Mt Gambier, they seem to have returned to Victoria and had the following children…..

Thomas BEST born 1868 at COLLINGWOOD
Ref = 15226

John BEST born 1875 at MELB
Ref = 10470

There’s a big gap between the births of Thomas and John!

I can’t find this family after the 1875 birth either at this stage.

Bit of overlapping here, but it could all help.

I don't think it is your Wm.  There is no death for an Ellen BEST nee BRISCOE in the time frame ie before your Wm's marriage in 1880.

It doesn't have to be bdm events that caused these places to be noted as residences.

There is also the possibility that there is an error on the marriage registration that Wm was a widower.  Seen it all before ;)
