William Cotton Bankrupt Directory 1820-1843
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 17:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I wondered if anyone had access to the Bankrupt Directory, this is the info I have on my ancestor William Cotton. On 23 March 1827 William was declared bankrupt living at High House Almondbury working as a cloth merchant Page 97 Bankrupt Directory 1820-1843, this wasn't the only time William was declared bankrupt.  I did find an article for him in the London Gazette 8 December 1857 where he became bankrupt again, but I've not been able to find out any more details about the earlier bankruptcy in 1827.

Regards
Julie

Possibly try the Borthwick Institute in York.  Or West Yorkshire Archive Services - they are at Huddersfield Library or alternatively records might be at Wakefield.  I can't see anything on-line.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Hi

For a long shot you could try one of the local papers. Huddersfield didn't have a paper at that time so it would have be the Leeds Mercury or the Leeds Intelligencer, they have them on micro film at Huddersfield local history library

Hi J.R.

Will have a look and see if they are in there.  I know from his second Bankruptcy the details appeared in the London Gazette, and when my ancestor Alexander Bonallie's ship sank coming back from Germany that also appeared in the London Gazette, likewise hubby's ancestor Cornelius Northrop's bankruptcy but no luck this time, I'm beginning to realise now why we don't have a vast family fortune buried out there all the family were either involved in misfortune or became bankrupt ::)

Regards

Julie
