Tintwistle 1871 address location
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 14:57 GMT (UK) »
I live in Bristol and wonder if anybody can help me by telling me where two 1871 locations of my relatives are/or are near to today in Tintwistle.

The addresses are Oddfellows Cottages and it looks like Miller (or Mellor) and Jayne's Cottages.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

martin

The Cheshire Tithe Maps site is usually useful for these types of question, but I'm struggling at the moment. Looking at the apportionments for Tintwistle there are two plots listed where the owner at the time of the apportionments (c1840) was the "Society of Oldfellows" both are "house and gardens" - plots 6 and 94. My guess is that Oldfellows was probably a mistranscription of Oddfellows & it may be that one of these is your Oddfellows Cottage.

However the direct map link from there isn't working at the moment. By going to the maps

Selecting under Township - Tintwistle (Arnfield hamlet) and enlarging the scale I was eventually able to locate plot 96 on Manchester Road/Church Street, opposite the New Road junction. Plot 6 looks to correspond to 36 Church Street on the modern map. There's an 1875 map on the same site. I can't see building names on any of the versions, sorry.

There's an extract from a Gazetteer of c 1870 for Tintwistle on this site:

By the way Tintwistle is now in Derbyshire.

The original 1871 census pages are not the easiest to read but addresses are listed in the following sequence
Sch No 1 - Beeley House?
Sch No 21 - Orchard Buildings
Sch No 30 - K??? Buildings
Sch No 32 - Oddfellow Cottages
Sch No 35 - Miller(?) & Jayne's Cottages

Old Maps   http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html

Click on link and enter coordinates   401870   397293
Click on link and when all maps finished loading, click on 1873 "old map".
When loaded in main window, click to "zoom".

You can see Beeley House and Orchard Buildings (but not the others). This fits with the location pinpointed by mshrmh
