Ben and Henry /Henery Graham Masons Huddersfield.
« on: Saturday 16 February 13 12:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi  I have come across Ben/ Benjamin  and Henry / Henery  Graham in my research.  I am trying to find out if they fit into my family.
I can't find a birth or baptism for either on an*****y   According to census and newspapers Ben was born 1822 in Huddersfield and died 1879 and was a master builder  and quite important in Huddersfield. I have found him in all censuses and he is unmarried.

Henry born 1817  in Huddersfield and died 1861. Again  a mason but again I can't find a birth or parents. He married twice first to a Sarah Haigh in 1845  and then Eliza Ann Lees in 1858.  I have found three children Abraham Haigh Graham 1847  Walter in 1849 and Henery  in 1854.

I was thinking they could be brothers on account of a Benjamin was witness to Henry's first marriage.

Henry gives his father as Joseph Graham (decd) on his marriage to Sarah Haigh
ADDED and on his marriage to Eliza Ann Lees

Either if Henry's marriage certs should give you a name and occupation of his father, which will be a start.

They are both born before Civil Registration, so you will then be reliant on any christening records, providing they were christened of course.

I would imagine there are many parishes to search through that could come under the general description of 'Huddersfield', so they may take some finding.

When the one who didn't marry died, did he leave a will? If so, there is always the chance he left legacies to nieces and nephews, in the absence of having his own children - therefore this might confirm whether or not he is a brother to the other one or not.

Hi

Having looked at the probate record of Henry the executors of the will were his brothers Benjamin and Abraham Graham.

Henrys marriage certs. give the fathers name as Joseph.

At the time of Abrahams death 1871, he was 67 giving birth year of 1804.

Baptism:  Huddersfield  St Peter 29 Apr 1804, birthdate 14 Apr 1804. Parents Joseph GRIME and Mary Shaw.

Other baptisms on IGI give surnames of Grime or Graham.

Still can't find Henry or Benjamin.

And Benjamin also left a will, and his details coincide with those in the details of Henry's will regarding abode, and occupation.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi Everyone   Thanks for all your replies and information.  I have found many children for Joseph and Mary Shaw who were all baptised at St Peter's in Huddersfield as they were living in Longroyd bridge  They married in 1793 and first child in 1794   The last child I have found for them was born in 1814. It seems a big gap to 1822 and Mary would have been 50 then, perhaps there were more children  I haven't found.  Or perhaps they moved.
So they were definatly brothers.

Thanks again Wendy.
