seaching the 1881 Census - Help!
« on: Sunday 05 June 05 15:58 BST (UK) »
I have got a copy of the 1881 census on cd, I have not used it for some while and have had a look around it this afternoon, I was under the impression that you could seach by address, or road. I can't seem to work out how to do this, although there does seem to be a reference to it in the help index, I just can't work it out.
I would like to look up a particular road in Whitby can anyone give me a shove in the right direction ??
Thanks

Hi,

Can't help you with the CD, but I think you can search the 1881 for free at ancestry.co.uk and it's possible to do an address search...otherwise, post the details and we can have a look for you!

Regards, Emma ;)

HI there

Don't have an 1881 census on CD but do have a 61 one  ;D
With that set,you use the last CD in the box, which gives you street names.
It's a London one so there are lots of different areas.
Don't know if that helps, but as Emma says you can search the Ancestry 1881 by adress now anyway. Who are they and where do they live?

I'm sure one of us can find them....unless of course you still want to play with your CD set  ;)

All the best

Carol

I would like to look at who lived in a road called the Cragg in Whitby , It seems to me that it wasn't a very well to do place, and looking up a link posted here for Kelly's on line I can only find one reference to it.
It is still in existence today, just being curious, not sure what I will find really!!

If you search on Ancestry.co.uk and just enter Cragg and Whitby-you get 482 names!!!

Anyone in particular you're after?

The ref is RG11/4834 folio 88 and I expect it stretches over quite a few pages  ::)

excellent, so I was right its the poor slum area of town!!

My curiosity has been tickled by the fact that we were in Whitby the weekend and stayed in a lovely cottage in the Cragg, really old world, and as I am into family history I wanted to see if any of my husbands folk had been in the Cragg at the time, I am awaiting my password retrieval to go and have a look myself!

Thanks for your help!

Hi lyzzydee

To search the CDs by address you need to use the "Neighbours - Advanced Query" option on the Search menu.

Put the Yorkshire disk in the drive.  wait for the search box to appear, then cancel it.  Click Search on the menu bar, then Neighbours - Advanced Query.

When that box appears, type in the bottom box (without the ")
"cragg AND whitby"

110 will appear beside the words in the top box.  Click OK.  Then use the F4 key to work your way through the hits until those with the address Cragg or Mount in Whitby appear.

Hope you can understand all that.

Nell

Thank you for that , I knew there was a way, I just couldn't work it out !

Looks like the whole of the Cragg was recorded as one big residence instead of individual numbers, so I may well need to see the enumerators description of the route and area to discover which end he started, I am particularly interested in number 3, I have discovered that there are some Davisons down there, so that is interesting.
