Hugh Gray my Brick Wall.
« on: Monday 18 February 13 20:17 GMT (UK) »
Jean or Jane Gray married William Cormack in 1826 in Aberdeen. Her father was named as Hugh Gray a labourer from Inverness.
Jane died 1857 in England at the age of 52 which would give her a birth date of c1805.
The trouble is I can find no trace of a Hugh Gray in Inverness.

Thank you Bleckie for your time, I don't think this is the right person but it is more than I've found, although it did start me searching again, most of the Grays seem to come from Ayrshire, but there are a few from elsewhere, I notice that Inverness and Aberdeenshire join at one point so I have started looking at grays in the west of Aberdeen.
Thanks again Liz

Liz, "Scotland's People" have a double entry for the marriage on 16th August 1826 in Aberdeen. This may or may not suggest that both families were from Aberdeen.
Saying that, have a look at this, esp' the 8th entry :-

Funnily enough, it's not working for me this morning. Inverness result for search from 1795 to 1815, under forename, Jane, father Hugh. I am not at my computer, and site access on this one is restricted.

I notice that Inverness and Aberdeenshire join at one point so I have started looking at grays in the west of Aberdeen.

They do, but the mutual boundary is in the middle of the Cairngorms, which would have been quite a barrier between the communities in Upper Deeside in Aberdeenshire and those in Badenoch in Inverness-shire.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you: Malky for the suggestion unfortunately the link isn't working, but I went directly to family search,is it the birth in Inverness to Hugh & Rachel or the one in Stirling. I don.t think the Hugh & Rachel is the right one since he was a merchant, but I will check the other one.
I did think both parties were living in Abedeen at the time of the marriage but I wasn't sure since the marriage took place at the grooms house.
Fortarian.I have to keep looking at maps of Scotland as I am unfamiliar with the country and most of them don't show the terrain,so back to the drawing board.

"Malky, that family search link is not working for me"

Back on my own machine. If you remove the "s" in http"s" on the web address, the link works.
