Name - Adoller?
« on: Tuesday 19 February 13 03:22 GMT (UK) »
I have found a birth in England in 1889 for someone with given names of Joseph Adelle in the index. However, when I look at the image itself it looks like Joseph Adoller.  This is typed, so I presume transcribed from a hand written entry.  This is not a common name; a search at Findmypast gives no results for Adoller in the given or surname fields.
Any suggestions to what the name might be?

Shelley

Hi Shelley

FreeBMD transcribe him as Joseph Adoller FAIRS, registered in Fulham

Probably this is an 'original' mistranscript, either on the Index or on the actual birthcert (mis-heard by a registering official for example) as I think there is little doubt he is James Adolphus FAIRS, who was born about 1889 Fulham.

In 1901: Joseph  Adolphus , as Joseph FAIRS age 12, b Fulham - along with his 7 yr old Brother David, b Fulham - is in the 1901, Wandsworth household of his older married brother, Walter John FAIRS age 24, b Luton Essex.    RG13 / Piece 484 / Folio 49 / Page 5

He married on  in 27th March , 1910  St Anne's Church, Wandsworth.
Joseph Adolphus FAIRS 21, Bachelor, Gateman, of 21 Jerratt Lane, Father: John FAIRS, Coachman
Florrie CAPE 22, Spinster, of 21 Jerratt Lane, Father: Albert CAPE, Seaman
Witness: Arthur James RICE (or is it PRICE???) and Kate CAPE
Joseph signed his name in full.

Cheers

Ah, finally able to reply.  I've had all sorts of trouble.

Ambly, thaks so much for all this information.  You have been very generous with your time.  I've now found him as Joseph Adolphus in the marriage index.  Funny how names can be misconstrued, especially uncommon ones.

Thanks for the 1891 census information.  Sadly, both parents died within days of each other in 1900, so it seems the family had to be split up.

As brother Walter John appears to have been registered in Epping Essex and 1881 gives his place of birth as Chigwell Essex, I would suggest that his place of birth on 1901 should have been Loughton Essex?

Thanks for your input Jennifer.  I'll take your advice on that one.  I'm from Australia and flat out working out where all the English counties are!  ;D
