Robert and Bridget Cooper of Wynberg
« on: Saturday 23 February 13 14:05 GMT (UK) »
I'd like to try and gather more info on the family of Robert Cooper (born Hampshire, England, circa 1775, according to his burial record) and his wife Bridget (nee Burke). Robert came to the Cape as part of the British army (arrival date unknown), and, I'm told, was an NCO in the Cape Regiment until his retirement (again, date unknown). After leaving the Army, he set up a trading store near Wynberg Camp, which I'd be keen to find out more about. He died in Wynberg in 1841, and his wife appears to have taken over the business, but it sounds as if it went insolvent around 1844. I have no idea what happened to Bridget afterwards or when she died.

His daughter Sarah (born Dublin, Ireland?) married a William Cutting in 1919, and the couple were disinherited by Robert after William went bankrupt, though the grandchildren were not. Robert had other children as well, but I've had extreme difficulty in confiming who they were, though I've come across a notice in a newspaper notifying the public that Robert would not be held responsible for any debts his "Minor son, William" might have accrued. To muddy the waters there are a few unconnected Coopers in the Cape around the same time period.

I'd be very grateful for anything at all about this family and their doings.

If you look in the National Archives under KAB you will find a umber of things about Robert and Bridget.  They both wrote out wills in 1841 and 1834.  It would also appear that Bridget died in 1862.

If you look at the stickey's you will find out how to order copies from the Cape Town archives.

Thanks, Nookie. I already knew about the wills but had missed Bridget's date of death. I received some new info about Robert and Bridget and their children a couple of days ago, which has moved things along considerably, and have also been able to work out that Robert may have been discharged from the Cape Regiment around mid-1817, when it was re-organised into two smaller units. (This was around the same time period as when Robert bought the land for the trading store.)
