It might be a good idea to get one of the childrens birth certificates to establish Elizabeth's maiden name

Birth March qtr 1871
Petit    Emily
Madeley    6a   691

A tree on Anc* has her name as Elizabeth Hewitt  ::)

Jayne hasn't been back but I thought I might take a look ... since I love a mystery man/woman.

Walter seems to have avoided being born, marrying or dying. ;)

In 1841 I would wager he is the Walter transcribed at Anc'y as Pettil in St Mary Newington, Surrey, born c1836 not in county. He is in the household of a Kent couple, also born not in county: Henry c1783, a clerk, and Harriet c1799.

In 1851 he looks to be Walter Pettitt, an apprentice in St Vedast, Middlesex (I have never ever heard of that place!).

So unfortunately, he doesn't appear with parents.

I certainly agree that getting a child's birth certificate to learn Elizabeth's birth surname is the first essential step!

For info, in 1891 Anc'y transcribes them as PELLETT (the middle Ts aren't crossed in the original):

Walter 50 born London Islington
Elizabeth 40 born Lancashire Manchester
Kate 16 born Staffordshire Wolverhampton
Arthur 9 born " "

Arthur is still with them in 1901
Elizabeth's birthplace certainly varies; in 1901 it is Birkenhead Cheshire c1843.

Ah, better late than never, many thanks! (I'd had this tab open when my firefox crashed a while back and just came back to it ...)

If only duplication of effort had actually been saved by non-duplication of posting.
