Hi Can anyone help me to date this photo. I have received a copy from a relative in Australia who believes it may be an ancestor. Can you identify the uniform(  believed British but not definate  Regards trevor

The case looks like an 1860's Ambrotype.

The cracked glass looks like an ambrotype too, but not the picture. Is this a scan, or what? Ambros very sharp and clear.

The picture itself is throwing me. Is it an original that has been quite crudely hand coloured at some time ?  The man's head just seems to be too far above his shoulders. Can't make my mind up about it at present.

Looks like an 1850's - early 1860's ambrotype.It's dark appearance is probably due to it being under tinted glass.Agree with George it does look quite crudely painted,these were usually expertly done by miniature artists.
He has one medal up & may be RM.
