So they were in the workhouse at a young age, and I agree that the father on the marriage may be fictitious, and the BC for Harriet b 1853 may be the right one

Thanks Margp, the 1861 census isn't coming up on ancestry. 
I'll try searching with just the initial and see if it comes up.

Got the 1861 Union census and the brother does look like a F rather than a J for John as on the 1871 census!

The workhouse records will be at Cambridge Archives if there are any and I live in Cumbria  :-[

I keep going back to Harriet and I have tried all types of searches and not been able to come up with anything definitive but, and there is always a but, I have just done a random Morley search on free BMD and there is a Sept 1854 Linton death for a John Morley - how I missed that I don't know!!

Anyway, a pure guess, if the John/F  b 1854/5 is Harriet's brother then that makes a small possibility that the John who died Sept 1854 could be their father?  There again didn't they separate families in the workhouses?

I suppose another way to look at it is that Morley is the mother's name and that both kids were illegitimate?

There is also a marriage for a John Morley and Ann Thake but I followed this through sometime ago and for some reason it didn't fit. 

There is a Hackney death for Harriet Fitch in 1924 age 71 so that ties in with the Linton Union Harriet's dob.

A look up in the parish records at the archives might be the best way forward.........

going back to her absence in 1901/11 - do you know what happened to the 2 daughters? Married? Or missing with Mum?
