Elijah Usher - born c.1841 but Did He Die?
« on: Friday 01 March 13 20:42 GMT (UK) »
Am having real trouble tracing a record of the death of Elijah Usher b. c. 1841 Saxby, Lindolnshire, 6th child and 4th son of Richard and Sarah Usher.  Having spent his early years in Lincolnshire he had moved down to London by 1866 when he married Emily Ann Wray on 17 June 1866 at St. George, Camberwell, Southwark.

He was a carpenter by trade and he and Emily brought up their family of 7 children at various addresses in Lambeth between 1866 and 1891 when he was recorded in the census as Eliza Usher of 4 Lavender Road, Lambeth.

Emily is a dressmaker residing at the Lambeth workhouse in 1901 although recorded as being married.  She is still in Lambeth workhouse in 1911 but this time recorded as a widow.  Emily dies in 1917.

I cannot find Elijah Usher in any census beyond 1891 neither can I find a death record between 1891 and 1911.

Is anyone able to locate him, dead or alive, between 1891 and 1911 please?

Thanks, Pheno

Genes Reunited has a death for Usher    Elijah John    1881    Wandsworth    London.
Could that be him?
Bazalgette, but mainly not FH information.
Has written a biography of Jean Louis Bazalgette - "Prinny's Taylor"

I don't think so.  I should have said that Elijah and Emily's youngest child Esther Annie was born 7 Feb 1884.  Also, although its possible that his name was Elijah John he has not once been recorded as anything other than plain Elijah in all the sources that I have found so far.

Thanks for looking though.

Hi

Not sure if this is relevant to your Elijah

Reynolds's Newspaper (London, England), Sunday, March 30, 1890

MISSING RELATIVES OR FRIENDS

USHER should this meet the eyes of Elijah Usher or any persons knowing him, who left Lincoln England several years ago for Sydney, and supposed to still be there, will he or they, write to his sister Emma Tookey of 34 Carnaervon Street Cheetham Manchester. He will hear something to his advantage. Sydney papers please copy.

This says Elijah who left England several years ago(dated 1890) and yet he has been found on the 1891 census-albeit down as Eliza  ;D

Something doesn't add up here,he doesn't appear on a post 1890 passenger list either.

I think there were two Elijah Ushers around during this period.

Mine was born about 1841 and registered at Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire.  However, there seems to have been another born about 1844 registered at Lincoln and who seems to often appear as Elijah Usher Usher.  He was the son of William & Elizabeth Usher and had a sister Emma.  As he doesn't seem to appear on any UK census beyond 1861 I think he is probably the subject of the missing person notice.
