Thomas Gledville (or Gleduille) Jackson
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 07:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

Please, can anyone throw any possible light on the background of Thomas Gledville (or Gleduille) Jackson who I understand was born in Leeds, Yorks 1843/44 and died in Adelaide, Sth Australia in 1930 - . I understand he arrived in Australia (possibly Melbourne) aged 11 years in 1855 and that he went on to marry Lucy Marchant at Ballarat in 1869.
I am particularly keen to discover info pre Australian arrival and if anyone can help to that end I would be very grateful.
Thank you.
James

Does his marriage/death certificate give any information on his parents

Dear Rosie
Interestingly, the very early Australia record of his marriage and later, the death certificate, do not supply the names of his parents..............

I wonder if Gledville was his mothers surname.  There are a few Thomas Jackson births in Leeds at that time but none registered with that middle name.

However he should be on a census here in 1851 so will have a look.

Do you know his occupation?

Again there are a few to choose from in 1851 born Leeds.

Did he have children - any unusual names that might be a clue?
Presume he travelled out with parents if he was only 11 at the time.

Ah there is a family tree with him on that gives his parents as William G (for Gledville perhaps)
and Hannah Wray.  That might help find him on the census.

The family tree named a child of Thomas with middle name Wray so if you know that person the link to Hannah Wray makes sense  :)
