1872-3, 1873-4, 1874-5 all at 41 Hadden Street

1875-6 until 1877-8 inclusive - not in Woodside part of the directory

1878-9, 1879-80 both at 49 Barron Street

1880-81, 1881-82 both at 35 Barron Street

The other merchant, John Black, is at 33 Hadden Street in 1872-3, then disappears from Woodside.

You should get the SP entries as they show you the original document and will tell you her marital status.

It would seem that John and Isabella probably separated between 1851 and 1861.

In 1861 John 49, shown as married, living with mother Ann 80 at 147 Barron Street, Old Machar and brothers Alexander 45, Joseph 39 and Francis 34.  Shown as Quarry Contractor.

In 1871 still with mother (91) and brothers at 129 Barron Street - he is now a General Labourer.

In 1881 at Bridge Street living alone and 'Labourer General'.

Couldn't find him in 1891 and eventually discovered his death - died 8/4/1889 at Westfield, Balgowrie (?), Old Aberdeen - General Labourer aged 78 - parents shown as William Black, Snuff-Miller (deceased) and Ann, formerly Skinner (deceased).   Shown as married to Isabella Brown.

"Balgowrie" is probably Balgownie.

The place John died was in Old Aberdeen, so Blairgowrie is out as it is in Perthshire. Balgownie is in the right place. It is famous for its 13th century bridge over the River Don.

Thank you everyone, using the information you all gave me I managed to get John's death certificate. I found his parents William and Ann. I got William's birth record from 1781 and found his parents John Black and Margaret Smith. (Another John Black to go with the other William.. oh yay). According to the birth record William was born 1781 in Durris, Kincardineshire.

I managed to find the marriage record for John Black and Margarett Smith on SP they were married in 1780 in Banchory Ternan, Kincardineshire, Scotland and it says in the record that John Black at mill of Bleredeyne, (in the parish of Durris) wishes to marry blah blah blah. So the problem I am having now is finding John Black's birth record. I have found two John Blacks in Kincardine, one is born in 1850 in Durris and the other in 1854 in Banchory-Ternan.. So I'm kind of stuck how do I know which one is the right one? The marriage banns don't mention an age of course..

Thanks again everyone for your help!
