PS.  Just an afterthought.  Good chance Jane's mother's maiden name was Smith, hence her middle name.

Again many thanks for your prompt replies.

I will see about getting access, and paying the £7 (in AUD), and following up on those details you have found.

Dave

I had had that thought also, but the chasing up was the main problem.

Agian, many thanks

Will have to put brain into gear more often ::)

Good luck.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on.  The death record for Jane / Jean is your best bet initially.

Hi again,

I couldn't resist looking.  I had some spare credits so looked at the death of Jane.

It actually shows her parents as ADAM McKinlay and Margaret Barr

This would appear to be them in 1841

Address:    Eglinton, Gorbals

Adam Mckinlay    47 manager Scotland
Margt Mckinlay    56  Scotland
Jean Mckinlay    20  Scotland
John Mckinlay    18  Scotland
Merion Mckinlay    12  Scotland

Looking at the names of Jane and Daniel's children, I see there is a son Adam and daughter Margaret.  Very common in Scotland for children to be named after grandparents (You may be aware of the Scottish naming tradition which often follows a regular pattern).

Last message for now, but something I should have mentioned before.
Sign up to Ancestral Scotland here... http://www.ancestralscotland.com/newsletter/

You'll be sent an email with a voucher code for SP for 10 free credits.

Ancestral Scotland is a reputable site and they wont send SPAM.  Maybe 1 or 2 emails per month at most.  It is also very easy to unsubscribe after they've sent the voucher code email.
Other family members can also sign up and give you their voucher code = 10 free credits every time! :D  You only need to register with SP ONCE and can use anyone's voucher code.

8am here now and I've not been to sleep last night.  So, I'm off now.  :)

Thank you very much for all that information.

Your mention of the name Adam tickles the memory cells, so will have to go through the information I currently have, to check if there is an Adam. I think there is but just where etc I will check.

I am not aware of the Scottish naming tradition, so your mention of it will definitely be of help.

As I said at the start, the information about Arthur was from a family tree I was given, and was not verifiable due to no details, so your find regarding Adam is much more likely, due to the source.

Again, many thanks for all your help and interest in this case.

No problem.
I enjoyed doing it.

As for the naming traditions, it is not 'set in stone' but is often followed.  It's certainly useful sometimes in working out parents names.

Eldest son - named after his paternal grandfather
Second son - after his maternal grandfather
Third son - after his father
Fourth son - after his father's eldest brother

Eldest daughter - after her maternal grandmother
Second daughter - after her paternal grandmother
Third daughter - after her mother
Fourth daughter - after her mother's eldest sister
