Advice needed on pre 1837 progression please
« on: Sunday 10 March 13 18:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am hoping someone can advise me on how to progress further with my search possibly in the Herefordshire area.

I have a Thomas Morgan b.c.1801 and his wife Mary b.c. 1801 both appear to be Herefordshire of origin from the 1841/51 census'. I have them living in Bedwellty with their children including Timothy b.c. 1838 Abergavenny.

My problem is this, it is such a common name and such a big area which I believe boundaries may have changed over the years for, am I realistically going to be able to track Thomas and Mary any further back? If it's possible then what route should I consider ie certificates that would give me clues etc?

Any help & advice would be appreciated TY!

Thanks all :)

In 1841 I found them as Timothy was a less common name, they are at Sirhowy Iron works with children Timothy(3) and William(13). Thomas is aged 40 and so is Mary, both born out of county.

In 1851 it is taken again in the parish of Bedwellty but next to address all it says is 371 sirhowy. Below is the link on the deciphering forum where it appears Thomas is born Herefordshire.

If William was aged 13 in 1841 that puts a marriage at possibly c.1828 but in 1851 William is 16 so I am really stuck as I don't know for sure what timespan to be looking in  :'(

All help is very welcome and very much appreciated  :-*

A pure bit of speculation from me, there is a timothy morgan baptism on familysearch in goodrich herefordshire, father thomas morgan, in i think, 1777. your thomas's uncle?

yes I know its remote, there are lots of morgans, lots of timothys, but not as many when you put the two together.
do you have marys maiden name from timothys birth cert

do you have Timothy's birth cert? If not, worth getting as it would give you Mary's maiden name and possibly make it easier to find the marriage.

Timothy Morgan dec qtr 1838 Abergavenny vol 26 pg 23

Given that William looks to have been born in Herefordshire according to the census entries, the marriage could well be there as well.

No I don't have his birth certificate yet as I wasn't sure what that would tell me given that it's so early, I haven't needed to apply for an earlier one to date but this might be one that I think I need.

Thanks for all the help and advice :)

I think the birth cert might be the way to go and if that doesn't tell me anything, then rethink it.

Update: I have ordered the birth certificate this morning so hopefully this will help in some way, thanks all!
