1891 census look up please
« on: Monday 11 March 13 16:10 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a James Young Simpson in the 1891 census.  He was born in Elgin, Scotland c1838.  His occupation was a Tailor.  I have him in the 1901 and 1911 censuses living in Gloucester.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Betty

Thanks for your reply.  Is there any indication that he employs people and if he is married.

Your help is much appreciated.

It appears that he is a boarder in the house of  Emily Warren aged 36 a widow and her son Herbert Warren aged 11. Emily's occupation is as a Milliner and she was born in Banbury Oxfordshire.

James Simpson's occupation is just as a Tailors Cutter with no employees mentioned, but gives his state as married.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your reply.

This could certainly be my guy.  The only thing that is troubling me is that he is a Tailor's cutter.  On all other cencuses he is a Taior employing people.

In 1881 he is with his first wife in Nairn.  He marries for a second time but seems to leave her in Elgin and moves down to Gloucester where he is found in the 1901 and 1911.

Thanks again for your help.

I am glad to have been of some help.
I see he died in Gloucester in 1919, so never returned to Scotland to live.

I found an entry for James in the Kellys directory for Gloucester in 1897.

I now need to find someone with access to old newspapers.  I have found some interesting headings for James on the site for old newspapers.

I also found an entry for him in the Edinburgh Gazette which indicated that his wife lived in Elgin and he lived in Gloucester.  Seems a strange set up.

Thanks

Betty

In 1888 a James Young Simpson of Arthur Street, Gloucester was summonsed to appear in court for the maintenance of his wife and family, but the case was dropped after an arrangement was made.

Great find. This looks like the James in the 1891 census.  It also looks like it is my guy.  I wonder what made him choose Gloucester!!

Thanks for your reply.  Much appreciated.
