Achtachaild
« on: Wednesday 13 March 13 18:05 GMT (UK) »
I asked a while ago if anyone knew where Achtachaild, Loch Broom was, but didn't receive any replies.

I am attaching a part of the 1841 census that I have downloaded showing the name Achtachaild, int the hope that someone might be able to tell me where about in Lochbroom the place is.

Have you looked for it on the National Library of Scotland maps website? It gives you free access to old maps of Scotland including large-scale 19th century Ordnance Survey ones (6" to the mile).

Hi all ,

Think this is the general area , other addresses from the Census pages(freeCEN) would seem to be Ardesse , Badcall , and Dornamuck.

ev

Added - the family would seem to be Alexander Fraser 45 , Anabela Fraser 35 + children.

Hi Carol

There is mention of an Achtascaild here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~coigach/98militia.htm and also here www.archive.org/stream/dundonnellcause00mackgoog/dundonnellcause00mackgoog_djvu.txt

Very similar to what you are looking for although not further clues as to location  :-\

Hi

I think it's   Auchtascailt

It's just to the  SW of Dundonnell  in the area where some of your family came from.

At least you won't have to do a cross country trek this time  ;D

As always, Gadget, you are amazing.

As to the cross country trek - I think I've already trekked this path.............even if it was only to have tea and scones at The Dundonnell Hotel.

That was to keep us going before we trekked to the Bard Buie Cemetery past Badrallach......

At least I know my family didn't travel too far - well they didn't until the 1900s.............
