Brabourne in Kent
« on: Saturday 16 March 13 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to Brabourne parish registers? I am looking for James BAKER born late 1850 father James. With a name like BAKER it really is a needle in a haystack but all I have gives him as born in Brabourne and luckily his marriage is fully on line at Stelling Minnis

Welcome to Rootschat, hope you enjoy your stay here.

I spotted James on the 1861 census aged 10  He is living
with his Grandparents James aged 60 and Margaret aged 55
They are living in Spelling.
It does state that James born about 1851 was born in Brabourne.
So wonder where James his Dad is??
I looked on the 1881 census as well and Margaret is still alive
and aged 80. It still states James is the Grandson.
James and Naomi are living with Margaret still in Spelling
and they have 6 children.  James is classed as a Wood Dealer.
James died in 1910 aged 60.
Can I ask what it is you want from the Brabourne registers.  Is it the
exact date of Birth??  Just wondered if he could be illegitimate with
two parents missing and living with the Grandparents?
Hope this helps a little

That looks good Casalguidi.
Solves the problem where the 2 Parents went.
Shame they didnt want poor James anymore but at least
his Grandparents looked after him even until Margaret was 80
Bless.
Noticed James the Dad was a dealer in wood as well.

Yes, I think the above is a good probability.

James BAKER, woodman of Stelling Minnis died 15 Jan 1878.  There is a will (effects under £100) with the executors widow Margaret and James BAKER woodman.  It may (or may not as the case may be) prove useful to get a copy.  This can be ordered by post for £6 http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills

Thought I had posted an earlier reply but its not there so again. This has all been very helpful . Louise BAKER is the one I am really looking for who I think was a sister to James(1851). Louise(abt 1835) married Mark GOLDUP with first child Margaret Matilda! The 1881 census of grandmother Margaret with another gt.grandson Thomas GOLDUP was the clue and now Matilda could be the mother. The 1841 also has grandparents James & Margaret as a waterman - explains a lot.

Yes, I think she could well be the "Lucy" (maybe even Luey) in the 1851 census with James and Matilda.  The age is about right it's just the birthplace of Tunstall is a bit out according to later census:

1901 age 62 b.Stelling
1891 age 50 b.Dover
1881 age 39 b.Barham
1871 age 40 b.Barham

I haven't yet seen any baptism which would fit for Lucy/Louisa c1841 give or take a year or two.

There is a possible birth registration for James in the March quarter 1851 ........ perhaps that would be worth looking into?
