a jockey at Trefeglwys
« on: Saturday 16 March 13 21:01 GMT (UK) »
A 1845 marriage at the parish church in Trefeglwys has the groom's father as Edward Jones, profession Jockey.
I have trawled the 1841 census and most I can see are farmers, labourers and miners.
It has been suggested that it could be something to do with the lead mines in the area.
Any ideas?
Thanks

He could be working in one of the big houses locally which raced their horses - possibly mostly as a groom but also a jockey for the races

I thought that might be the case but trawling through the census did not bring anything to light.

I'm sure I've seen a similar post before; 'jockey' in previous times (more recently in Wales) could mean simply 'groom' or 'stablehand'.

Having a tidy up and printing my threads. on reading this I see that  I have have not said thank you. Since then I have seen a parish register describing another person as Jockey/ Horse trader
So a belated thank you. Better late than never
